Reuters is looking for a talented senior journalist to lead our agenda-setting coverage of China’s economy and economic policy. China’s economy stands at a decisive time, entering a period where the decisions that policymakers embark upon will make the difference between whether the world’s second-biggest economy finds new drivers of growth or stagnates amid a mountain of government and corporate debt.
To tell that story, we need a reporter with a strong understanding of what drives China’s economy and policy makers’ thinking to lead our team in Beijing, interpreting everything from the latest data points to subtle changes in policy makers’ language to give our readers a clear sense of where the economy and policy around it are headed. The demand for the team is to be both fast and thoughtful, producing a varied file with the spectrum of breaking news and scoops, quick-hit initiative stories and all the way to deeply reported insight and investigative stories. The senior correspondent needs to harness the resources on the team to deliver such a file.
The successful candidate will be a proven operator when it comes to building sources, breaking news, spotting trends and being able to put complex topics into digestable prose. She or he will be brimming with ideas for stories that not only serve finance industry insiders but connect the dots for readers less familiar with China’s economy and policy. The team leader must be a good coach and have the ability to help less experienced reporters hone their ideas and sharpen their stories, and expert at organizing workflow in order to get the most out of the team. She or he will also be game for working with teams and reporters covering other asset classes, including markets, commodities, company news and politics.
