Position description

Transparentem is a discreet, non-profit unit that adopts frontline investigative reporting and forensic methods in compliance with international ethical standards to illuminate supply chains and spur eradication of human and environmental abuses. We are a public service initiative that believes securing and improving the lives and environments of workers at all tiers of off-shored industry must start with independent, methodical inquiry.

We are seeking an investigations manager. Our investigative team works to develop detailed, fact-based reports tracing child labor, forced labor, abuse, environmental degradation, and corruption upstream in manufacturing supply chains.

The investigations manager will serve as the ultimate product manager of Transparentem’s reports. In that capacity, s/he will:

  • Organize the pursuit of leads and work with the Director of Investigations and analysts to direct on-the-ground investigators;
  • Oversee and coordinate the schedule for reports and presentations;
  • Manage the report drafting, editing and legal review process;
  • Manage the creation of external presentations, including videos;
  • Serve as the point-person for design and development-related vendors (e.g., video editors, graphic designers, printers); and
  • Oversee and edit all web content.

In addition, the investigations manager will:

  • Organize training sessions for the investigative team on necessary skills;
  • Help identify and develop secure communications and storage systems for the investigative unit;
  • Develop secure communications protocols for teams in different parts of the world;
  • With the Director of Investigations, coordinate investigative staff allocation on projects; and
  • Work with analysts to develop risk assessments for investigations.

The unit does not publish the products of its investigations. Instead, the unit delivers its reports strategically to selected entities best positioned to leverage their influence to positively impact vulnerable populations and remediate degraded environments.

The role reports to the Principal/Director of Investigations.

Start Date: Immediate

Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience.

Location: New York or Washington, DC

What We’re Looking For:

This is a challenging role that requires total discretion, as well as strong investigative, analytical, and organizational skills. We are looking for individuals with:

  • 7+ years of experience in an editorial and/or investigative role
  • A solid grounding in human rights, labor, and/or environmental issues
  • A strong project manager
  • Experienced and skilled writer and editor (style and copy) with strong attention to detail
  • A track record of establishing and meeting hard deadlines
  • Experience interacting with graphic designers
  • Strong research skills
  • Experience in video and digital story-telling and editing a plus
  • Knowledge of InDesign software a plus
