Position description

NRGI seeks to hire a Research Associate (RA) to work with and support the President, in conducting applied research related to governance issues; obtain, manage, organize and analyze data, help prepare presentations and briefs on substantive governance and related matters, and also assist with the substantive preparation of materials for high level meetings, events and outreach activities. The Research Associate will report directly to the President.


Provide Research Assistance (80%): 

  • Conducts empirical research and policy analysis on topics relating to policies and trends related to governance, transparency and accountability, including but not limited to the extractive industries.
  • Involves carrying out in-depth bibliography reviews, analysis of existing research, identifying areas of pending inquiry, and linking research to current events.
  • Conducts statistical analysis, utilizing econometric and related statistical tools, compiles and organizes datasets, and provides detailed interpretations of results and identifies areas of further inquiry. Prepares narratives of the results of empirical analysis as well as tables and graphs, including PowerPoint presentations. Develops excel-based tools to assist in the presentation and interpretation of large datasets.
  • Collaborates on the drafting and preparation (including co-authoring) of reports, working papers, policy papers, web commentary and blog entries on topics related to governance, development and the extractive industries.
  • Monitors current developments in relevant research areas, relying on effective internet searches. Contributes to compiling briefs on evolving events and substantively contributing to the writing and editing of related commentary, research pieces and presentations. Updates and checks existing data and footnotes; helps with editing and proofreading of publications.
  • Writes summary reports; briefing memos; reports on forums, symposia, and conferences; compiles abstracts, summaries, and analyses of books and articles.
  • Attends events as needed and prepares summaries.
  • Assists the President in coordination of NRGI's research and its Research/Data Committee

General Assistance (20%):

  • Assists in the coordination of PowerPoint presentations and in preparing talking points for meetings and events, drawing on the broader organizational knowledge.
  • Helps with preparation of some Board materials.
  • Support select senior management tasks as needed.

Required and Preferred qualifications

University degree in economics – at least a Master's degree in economics and/or statistics, with at least 3 years of empirical research experience in economics.

  • Experience working with governmental and/or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on governance, international development and economics issues is highly desirable.
  • Experience handling large datasets and knowledge of SAS, STATA, and related econometric packages is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience and competence to undertake research assignments with modest supervision.
  • Ability to work well under pressure to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment, as a team player.
  • Professional demeanor and high level of comfort working with high-profile individuals from government/international sector.
  • Fluency in French and/or Spanish is desirable.

Salary: Commensurate with experience; opportunities for professional advancement.

Work Hours: Full-time position, official hours are from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Flexibility required when extended hours are needed to meet deliverables.

Location:New York City or Washington, DC. Must be eligible to work in the United States.
