TechnoServe’s West Africa Regional Team, based in Washington, DC and Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, is successfully implementing a robust portfolio of single and multi-country programs in Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin. The team is currently seeking a dedicated program development professional to build upon the existing portfolio and support the development of new business opportunities in the region.

The Program Development Associate is a central part of the regional PD team and will play a key role in helping to expand the organization’s businesses solutions to poverty. The Associate will work closely with the West Africa Program Development Manager. S/he will be a dynamic participant in all aspects of program development, gaining exposure to economic development and sustainable business models across the organization’s footprint in the region. This position can be based in Washington, DC or anywhere in the region, with a preference to Abidjan, Abuja, or Accra.

As Program Development Associate you will:

  • Execute all aspects of proposal development, including coordinating complex efforts with dispersed proposal team members, drafting and editing technical proposals, drafting staffing and management sections, customizing past performance references, strengthening candidate CVs, and supporting donor intelligence efforts
  • Write short proposals or concept notes and budgets for non-competitive opportunities
  • Lead research and analytical efforts to create evidence-based program design, including conducting industry strategic scans and drafting illustrative business models across a variety of value chains
  • Research funders and partners in support of the capture process and conduct desk and field research as required to support program development
  • Recruit consultants to support program development and key personnel for proposals
  • Support knowledge management by synthesizing TechnoServe’s work in qualification statements for core sectors and regions
  • Engage with internal TechnoServe practice groups promoting best practices and technical excellence throughout the organization

You will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, economics, business, or another related field. Master’s degree preferred
  • At least 3 years of work experience in analytical and strategic roles within the private sector and/or development spheres
  • Prior experience working in emerging markets. Preference for work experience in West Africa
  • Must possess strong writing, editing, and proof-reading skills to ensure production of documents that are clear, concise, and grammatically correct. Proposal, case study, and/or concept note writing experience a strong plus
  • Proven ability to establish strong working relationships with private sector actors and international donors
  • Passionate about market-led approaches to helping the poor improve their livelihoods

  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Comfort making well-reasoned assumptions and triangulating data for validation
  • Must be detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills
  • Self-starter with strong time management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced oral and written proficiency in English. Ability to speak and write in French a strong plus
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of time
