LIGHT FOR THE WORLD is an international disability and development organisation whose vision is an inclusive society where no one is left behind. We strive for accessible eye care services and support inclusive education, empowering persons with disabilities to participate equally in society.
The LIGHT FOR THE WORLD EU Office in Brussels aims to ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities and the respect, protection, and promotion of their rights in all international cooperation policies of the EU, including in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Therefore we work together with all EU institutions and civil society networks.
Currently we are looking for an EU Advocacy Coordinator for our EU Liaison Office in Brussels. We strongly encourage persons with disabilities to apply for this position.
You are responsible for the overall development and implementation of the advocacy work towards the European Institutions to promote inclusive development and the rights of persons with disabilities in European Development Cooperation. Based on the overall strategy and focus of Light for the World, in this position, you will further develop the strategy for the LIGHT FOR THE WORLD EU office, in cooperation with the EU policy officer and in line with the overall LIGHT FOR THE WORLD framework. The implementation of the advocacy strategy is also one of your key responsibilities.
The key international frameworks for our work are the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within these frameworks we focus on pertinent topics, such as the EU budget and financial instruments, and disability-inclusive indicators. Furthermore in our advocacy work we want to support Light for the World’s focus topics: inclusive education, health (including eye health), employment and decent work, and overall the rights of persons with disabilities, without prejudice to other associated relevant topics on an ad hoc basis.
Among your most important tasks will be policy work (drafting and communicating position papers, identifying key actors and building networks), but you will also be responsible for organising events (including the corresponding logistical issues). In your role you will also be the focal point for a number of cross-cutting issues, such as monitoring and evaluation.
As the EU advocacy coordinator, you will manage the EU office, including the EU advocacy budget, and you will be responsible for the line management of the policy officer and prospective interns. In addition to working closely with the EU policy officer based in Brussels, you will also be part of the wider international advocacy team whose members are based internationally through Light for the World offices.
Much of the work of the EU office happens via international CSO networks and you are responsible for maintaining working relationships with these networks, as well as identifying potential partners.
The working language of the position is English.
