Position description

ThinkProgress has an immediate opening for an experienced Reporter to cover white nationalist trends and anti-democratic forces. This reporter will trace the political movements and ideologies that are shaping history across national boundaries, mainly focusing on the rise of the nationalist right.

In addition to providing regular reporting and analysis in this field, the reporter who fills this position will have the unique opportunity to partner with a team of researchers producing ThinkProgress’ Far-Right Dashboard, a new tool that will track the online influence of major far-right actors. The Reporter will be responsible for consulting with the researchers to help inform their methodology, providing feedback in early stages of the project, and covering any of the newsworthy trends unearthed by this tool.

We anticipate the term of this position will be one year.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive ThinkProgress’ coverage of illiberalism, nationalism, and anti-democratic forces.
  • Regularly produce breaking and analytical coverage of white nationalist trends and foreign interference campaigns within Western political frameworks.
  • Coordinate with the designers, researchers, and other personnel working on the ThinkProgress Far-Right Dashboard, as well as produce coverage of the newsworthy trends unearthed by this tool.
  • Perform other duties and cover other stories as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience reporting on foreign policy topics, with specific experience covering far-right white nationalist movements and their intersections with technology.
  • Expertise in Russian history and politics, and how they intersect with U.S. politics.
  • The project management skills to help shepherd a major research effort toward completion.
  • A commitment to ThinkProgress’ mission of delivering progressive accountability journalism.

This is a full-time position that is part of a bargaining unit represented by WGA East.
