Position description

We are seeking a Deputy Director of Investigations to join our investigative team. The team works to develop detailed, fact-based reports tracing human trafficking, child labor, worker abuses, and environmental degradation throughout manufacturing supply chains.

The investigative team gathers information and shapes Transparentem’s investigations, drawing from a broad network of inputs including: public sources and pay-walled databases, shipping records, foreign media, and auditor/regulator reports, as well as documents, recordings, notes, and other information provided by field investigators. They help identify when and how we should retain external consultants to expand its knowledge.

The role reports to the Vice President of Investigations.

We are currently focused on the apparel, accessories, and footwear industries.

S/he will:

  • Supervise Transparentem’s team of analysts, fostering an environment of teamwork, collegiality, excellence, and work-life balance.
  • Plan, oversee, provide direction for, and coordinate investigative projects in close consultation with the Vice President of Investigations and Investigations Manager, the latter of which serves as Transparentem’s internal project manager.
  • Ensure project content is aligned with Transparentem’s mission, appropriately staffed, and of high quality. Work closely with the Investigations Manager to ensure projects are completed on time and with necessary elements.
  • Facilitate communication channels between the analyst team and other Transparentem teams.
  • Contribute to investigative team tasks, as needed.
  • Provide fair, constructive, and timely feedback on performance expectations.
  • Travel periodically to train field staff and supervise investigations.


What We’re Looking For:

This is a challenging role that requires total discretion, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.

We are looking for individuals with:

  • Management and leadership training and experience;
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, and organizational skills;
  • Experience managing investigative work;
  • Work experience related to human rights, labor, and/or environmental issues;
  • US work authorization required.

A plus if you have:

  • An advanced degree in public/non-profit administration, business, human rights, law, or other relevant field;
  • Knowledge of and experience with effective management and leadership principles
  • International work experience;
  • Flexibility and desire to work in a high-intensity work environment.
