Freedom House promotes the spread of freedom and democracy around the world through research, advocacy, and programs that support frontline activists. We are a leader in identifying threats to freedom through our highly regarded annual reports, including: Freedom in the World, the standard-setting comparative assessment of global political rights and civil liberties, published annually since 1972; Freedom on the Net, the groundbreaking study of global censorship, surveillance, and free speech on the internet; and Nations in Transit, a widely cited survey on democratic reform in post-communist countries from Central Europe to Central Asia.  With 13 field offices and two U.S. offices, we  support the right of every individual to be free

 

Position Summary

Freedom House is seeking a full-time Editor based in our New York office to perform substantive editing, fact checking, and copyediting. Working across several publications, the Editor will play a key role in ensuring that all written products further Freedom House’s mission to deliver accurate, objective, and compelling analysis on global threats to democracy.

In addition to an interview, selected candidates will complete a Freedom House editing test to determine their suitability.

 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Copyedit and proofread country reports and other online content for grammar and style based on the Chicago Manual of Style and Freedom House style guide

  • Conduct substantive editing and supplemental research according to each publication’s methodology

  • Fact-check country reports and check for plagiarism

  • Review, approve, and evaluate the work of consultant fact-checkers

  • Ensure all work products comply fully with standards, policies, and mission of Freedom House

  • Other related duties as necessary

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five or more years’ work experience, including one to three years of professional copy editing and fact-checking experience required

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in international affairs, English, or related field; Master’s degree preferred 

  • Outstanding editing skills and a knack for concise, clear, and eloquent writing

  • Knowledge of and strong interest in democracy, human rights, and current affairs

  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills

  • Experience using Chicago Manual of Style preferred

  • Proven ability to meet tight deadlines and adjust work schedule to accommodate competing projects

  • Ability to collaborate with others and work as an effective team member

  • Foreign language skills highly desirable, especially French, Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Arabic

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word; additional knowledge of MS Office Suite preferred
