Position description


The Web Editor will report to the Executive Editor and, as part of the Foreign Affairs editorial team, help shape the magazine’s coverage across platforms; manage the website’s editorial activities; conceptualize, commission, and edit online features; shape short- and long- term development priorities; and supervise the work of junior editors. Foreign Affairs has more than 200,000 print and digital subscribers, and more than one million monthly visitors to the website.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • With the Executive Editor and broader editorial team, developing and executing editorial strategy
  • Commissioning, reviewing, and editing web content
  • Managing web editorial operations
  • Conceptualizing and helping develop new digital editorial features and products and using analytics tools to expand the reach of Foreign Affairs
  • Supervising junior editors, including setting their priorities and focusing on their professional development


  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Significant editing experience
  • Experience with digital publishing, social media, and multimedia editing
  • Ability to juggle a wide range of tasks on short deadlines and work well with writers, editors, web producers, and circulation and advertising staff
  • Management experience and skills, including experience supervising and developing staff
  • Strong interest in and understanding of foreign policy and international affairs
