Position description

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. Established in 1966, SIPRI provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public. SIPRI provides excellent opportunities for scientific and personal development. SIPRI is an equal opportunity employer.

SIPRI is seeking a Senior Researcher for the Sahel/West Africa Programme. The Sahel/West Africa Programme is a part of the Conflict and Peace research cluster, together with the Institute’s other regional security programmes and the Peace Operations and Conflict Management Programme. The Programme conducts analyses of the key conflicts and security and peacebuilding issues affecting the Sahel—with a particular focus on the relationship between security and development—in cooperation with African civil society organizations and research centres.

The Senior Researcher will participate in the implementation of projects in the Sahel/West Africa region and will be responsible for the quantitative analysis components, together with SIPRI project staff, the partner organizations and other participants in Africa. By mobilizing his/her pre-existing networks, the Senior Researcher will also be expected to support the development of projects and actively contribute to the acquisition/fundraising plan. The Senior Researcher will also directly assist the Programme Director in all relevant tasks and will provide cover for the Programme Director when needed. In some instances, research work is undertaken in cooperation with other programmes within SIPRI. The role requires fluency in written and spoken English and French. The position is based in Stockholm, Sweden, and might involve travel to West Africa or the Sahel on occasion.

Main tasks and responsibilities

The general responsibilities of the Senior Researcher, working together with partner organizations in West Africa and the Sahel and under the guidance of the Programme Director, are the following:

  • Implementation of the West African projects in collaboration with the SIPRI Programme staff, other SIPRI Researchers and the partner organizations;
  • Development of a quantitative methodology designed to monitor human security developments at a local level and contribute to the effectiveness of stabilization policies;
  • Elaboration of questionnaires (to be disseminated manually or via tablet computers) and related quantitative data analysis;
  • Direct engagement with African partner organizations and civil society organizations involved in research and outreach activities, particularly on quantitative analysis, capacity-building training workshops, outreach activities and events;
  • Strategic dissemination of research results;
  • Regular contributions to the Programme’s research output, including seminar presentations, panel discussions and high-quality research publications (e.g. in-depth articles and policy-relevant commentaries and blogs);
  • Proactive contribution to the Programme’s fundraising plan (e.g. identification of coherent themes, possible partnerships and funding opportunities; grant and proposal writing, including complex multilateral institutions applications; and budgeting and financing of the Senior Researcher’s own research);
  • Contribution to the design of Programme activities and participation in the collective life of the Institute through seminars, Research Staff Collegium meetings and other collaborative initiatives; and
  • Management and mentoring of junior staff and interns.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following experience and skills:

  • More than five years’ experience as a (Senior) Researcher initiating and carrying out (quantitative) research projects;
  • A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
  • Extensive and broad knowledge of the Sahel/West Africa region;
  • Demonstrable skills in quantitative analysis, methods and questionnaire design, including relevant software applications;
  • A pre-existing extensive network of contacts in Africa and international organizations;
  • A track record in acquisition, with proposal and grant writing skills;
  • A demonstrated ability to manage researchers and other junior staff; and
  • Fluency in English and French (both written and spoken).

Previous experience working with civil society organizations in West Africa and a deep understanding of dynamics in Mali, especially in the northern and central regions, are considered assets.
