Citizen Diplomacy International is looking for a passionate, globally-minded and detail-oriented person to lead our program team and promote our mission of connecting Philadelphia to the world.
Citizen Diplomacy International is a non-profit organization, which showcases the Philadelphia region through international business, educational and cultural exchanges. Working with the US Department of State and the City of Philadelphia, we bring over a thousand foreign leaders, government officials, business people and students to Philadelphia each year to share best practices, explore opportunities for investment, and promote person-to-person relations.
Overview of the Position
As director of programs, you should care passionately about Philadelphia and enjoy developing programs that highlight Philadelphia’s many resources to a variety of different audiences, local and international. You’ll report directly to the CEO and work with her and the director of development in service of Citizen Diplomacy’s mission to empower ordinary people to engage in international affairs. You’ll manage a small, but mighty, programming team (2 direct reports, many interns) that develops itineraries and makes connections for nearly 100 international delegations each year, so good judgement and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities is a must. You’ll plan, develop and set goals for our programming in line with our strategic plan, and also report out on our impact to a wide range of constituents. You’ll be highly organized and detail-oriented with awesome project management skills and enjoy working with a team to deliver measurable results. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
Oversee all aspects of Citizen Diplomacy’s programming - from inception and proposals to final reporting and evaluation
Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives for the 3 core program areas: Sister Cities, IVLP and International Relations
Develop a realistic schedule of programming that allows for opportunistic programs, without being reactionary
Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of our programs and to identify areas for improvement
Ensure staff and board are kept abreast of program activities and opportunities to engage and participate
Supervise program staff by providing direction, input and feedback
Ensure program staff members receive orientation, training and opportunities for professional development
Manage relationships with external consultants and partners charged with aspects of program delivery
Engage volunteers and interns for appropriate program activities, by assessing the need for volunteers and ensuring that volunteer assignments are meaningful and connected to program objectives
Communicate with donors and other stakeholders to enhance community support for our program and to solicit ideas for improvement
In partnership with the director of development, develop funding proposals for programs to enable program growth
In partnership with the leadership team, develop strategies for communicating our impact to stakeholders and to identify program resources and donors
Monitor program activities on a regular basis and produce accurate and timely reports for management and funders
Conduct an annual evaluation of all programs and report findings and recommendations to the CEO and major funders

Familiarity with Philadelphia’s international organizations, programs and media
Strong project management skills and experience managing complex, multifaceted projects with measurable success and program growth
Demonstrated success developing and evaluating program models and curricula, and selecting and successfully implementing innovative programs
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide variety of people from a range of different cultural backgrounds
Strong decision-making skills and the ability to assess situations, process relevant information and generate solutions
Excellent computer skills, including use of databases (familiarity with Salesforce a plus) and proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Apps, Excel, and social media.
Resourceful team player with experience managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams
A commitment to fostering a collaborative, encouraging, and learning work environment
Patience, flexibility and good sense of humour
The ability to work occasional evenings. We host monthly networking events and other programs, which are often held in the evening. The ability to stand for extended periods of time and carry up to 30lb of special event materials is also necessary.
A Bachelor’s degree and 8-10 years of relevant and progressively responsible experience is preferred.
Our Hiring Process and Timeline
We will review applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The position is available from July 1, 2018.
Our process is as follows:
We will begin scheduling short phone interviews immediately.
Following a successful phone interview, one-hour in-person interviews will begin in mid-July.
If you are invited for an in-person interview, we will ask for two work samples relevant to this position. This could include a writing sample, an overview of a project, or other relevant materials.
Finalists will be invited to a second round of interviews that will include program staff and board members. We will make an offer shortly thereafter.
Compensation and benefits
Salary range of $60,000-$70,000 depending on experience.
This is a full-time, exempt position. Occasional evening work is expected.
20 days PTO, 11 paid holidays
