Position description

API is hiring a Director of Accountability Journalism to help newsrooms report on people and institutions in power.

The Director of Accountability Journalism at API leads our nationwide program on accountability journalism, which identifies how newsrooms can innovate and improve their reporting on people and institutions in power. Some of the primary areas of focus are fact-checking, trust, transparency, and investigative reporting.

Our audience data and experience shows that accountability journalism is an essential part of what drives subscriptions or memberships and what builds authority, trust and community impact.

Responsibilities for this job include:

  • Identifying, spreading and supporting cutting-edge innovations in accountability journalism, wherever they occur;
  • Tracking trends, research and best practices in accountability journalism;
  • Providing guidance, training and education to news organizations and journalism education programs through industry conferences and interviews;
  • Writing blog posts on current issues relating to accountability journalism;
  • Assisting with the publication of major white papers and reports relating to accountability journalism issues;
  • Organizing and directing meetings, including API Thought Leader Summits, on issues relating to accountability journalism;
  • Collaborating with other related API programs, particularly our work on newsroom culture and our Metrics for News program;
  • Assisting in exploring potential partnerships and funding to enhance accountability programs;
  • Contributing to a weekly newsletter on fact-checking in partnership with the Poynter Institute;
  • Maintaining and updating online courses developed with the Poynter Institute as needed;
  • Keeping abreast of and on occasion suggesting or coordinating scholarly research that pertains to accountability journalism, trust, and related areas.
  • Working with current funders to manage and maintain grant reports.

Candidates for this job should have:

  • Ability to effectively create and present workshops and training sessions tailored to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to present sometimes complex information in a clear and engaging way.
  • Familiarity with digital verification tools,  and technology used to identify digital misinformation.
  • Ability to identify logical and effective partnerships to enhance API’s accountability program.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and efficiently with partners and colleagues.
  • Organization skills to manage several projects at a time.

Experience expected

  • At least 5 years experience with accountability journalism (such as being an editor and/or reporter in a news organization).
  • Solid journalism knowledge — its history, trends and future
  • Experience in working with foundations or nonprofits is a plus

Employment details

  • Full time position with health benefits and 401k retirement plan
  • Salary commensurate with skills and experience
  • Flexible, modern work environment with management focused on your results and productivity, not just hours spent at a desk
  • Must live in or relocate to the Washington, D.C., area and work from API’s office in Arlington, VA
