Position description

The Century Foundation is looking for a full-time policy associate based in New York to work with our dynamic and expanding foreign affairs program. The associate will help administer the foundation’s programs on nonstate actors, governance, citizenship and minority rights in the Middle East; fundraise for the foreign affairs program’s policy work; coordinate outside collaborators and contributors; edit reports; plan events; and other tasks. Candidates should have an enthusiasm for international affairs, along with a relevant bachelor’s degree and/or experience. The associate will report to senior fellows Thanassis Cambanis and Michael Wahid Hanna.

The foreign affairs policy associate supports the work of the senior fellows in the following areas:

Project Management:

  • Manage outside contributors on TCF administrative matters, including preparing contracts, ensuring payment is disbursed, making travel arrangements, and coordinating reimbursements from TCF
  • Review budget proposals from outside contributors and liaise with development and finance teams to ensure approval and disbursal of payments
  • Assist with grant applications and interim and final reports
  • Assist in managing project budgets and timelines
  • Liaise with communications, editorial, development, and finance departments on all project-related matters
  • Provide administrative support to the fellows, handling correspondence, scheduling, and responding to requests for information
  • Establish, monitor, evaluate and improve work plans to ensure timely completion of deliverables
  • Research specific areas for op-eds, articles, book chapters, and other publications, as requested by the fellows
  • Assist with the proofreading and editing of articles, book chapters, and other written material
  • Oversee the development of evidence in support of policy and advocacy activities, including data gathering, analysis, and modeling
  • Coordinate project events, including preparing invitations, travel arrangements, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support
  • Assist in managing budgets, including tracking monthly reports and grant information and drafting reports and requests, and preparing vouchers for reimbursement
  • Assist with social media outreach, including publishing a blog, website, video, podcasts, and/or using social media applications such as Twitter, Google+, Facebook, etc., as needed

Research, Writing, Audio, Production:

  • Assist in both short-term and long-term research projects as assigned by the fellows, including preparing paragraphs of written material to be inserted into reports, briefing bullet-pointed memos, and preparing literature reviews/bibliographies
  • Perform individual research as approved by the fellows, and produce short-form commentaries and long-form reports to be published on the TCF website
  • Record audio for podcasts and audio clips as multimedia elements in reports
  • Collect images from open-source outlets for foreign policy reports and commentaries
  • Liaise with production director on foreign policy report and commentary imagery

Fundraising and External Relations:

  • Work with the senior fellows to set and achieve annual, quarterly, and monthly development goals and outcomes
  • Identify foundation prospects, both in and outside of the United States, including the identification of specific grant opportunities
  • Prepare, revise, advise, and consult on funding proposals, donor reports, and other key funding documents
  • Oversee a number of policy, fundraising, and cultivation events
  • Organize general advocacy outreach efforts, including the development of policy briefs, presentations, key messages, talking points, briefings, and other relevant materials, such as drafting grant proposals and key advocacy materials
  • Ensure that all foreign policy communications are consistent with all other communications of the organization
  • Build, expand, maintain, and help coordinate partnerships with stakeholders and coalitions, UN entities, NGOs, private sector partners, nonprofits, and foundations, including representing TCF and the foreign policy team at related events

Policy Team Management:

  • Prepare monthly “Foreign Policy Roundups” for TCF leadership and communications teams, listing FP team activity, including research, travel, impact points, fundraising, publications, and media mentions
  • Maintain databases of FP team’s policy impact points, media mentions, and publications
  • Assist in preparation of materials as requested by TCF management and board outlining team strategy and output, and upcoming activities


  • Organize travel arrangements and accommodations for speakers as well as reimbursements from TCF
  • Assist in development of targeted invitations lists for events
  • Draft event descriptions and invitation language and collect speaker bios for programs and publicity
  • Assist in research on events venues


  • Screen and assist with interviews for intern applicants
  • Prepare summer work plan for interns
  • Consult with intern on research and writing
  • Edit intern writing and prepare their written work for production


  • Liaise with the communications and development teams on opportunities to advance key advocacy initiatives through various mediums
  • Supervise and support interns, program assistants, outside contributors, and consultants as needed
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  • Experience or demonstrated interest and engagement in foreign policy or international affairs
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience
  • Strong attention to detail, highly organized, able to manage priorities and meet deadlines
  • General office skills (email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, project management)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexible, collaborative, supportive, and proactive
