Based in central Vancouver, the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APFC) is a national non-profit organization created by an Act of Parliament.  It has been providing research and analysis on Canada-Asia relations for over thirty years, with the Foundation being internationally regarded as a leading light on this subject on national importance.  Enabled by a content engine of world-class applied research, the APFC is committed to developing its role as a national catalyst for engagement with Asia (and vice-versa) through policy and strategy development, stakeholder dialogue, high level events and round-tables.

To lead the vitally important research mandate, operations and team, the Foundation is seeking a VP, Research.  This role will report directly to the CEO and will be a key member of the leadership team. This role is absolutely core to the Foundation.   With a responsibility to set and execute the research agenda for the Foundation, the VP will provide vision, leadership and stewardship to the research team, and ensure the highest possible standards of research, working with both in-house staff and external fellows/associates. Externally the VP will interface extensively with Governments, institutions, universities and the corporate community in Canada and Asia and represent the Foundation as a speaker or participant at forums and events.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience

  • Strong grounding in applied research, with innovative and pragmatic approach to themes, deliverables and target markets
  • Understanding of how funding works and its impact on the sustainability of the organization
  • Team management; strong mentoring and coaching of a team with diverse levels of experience
  • Track record in innovative approach to applied research, for topics and deliverables
  • Budget management (circa $1M)
  • Excellent written communication skills at professional deliverables level
  • Exceptional verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with a range of parties at very senior levels  
  • An international mindset and highly developed cultural awareness
  • Specific expertise in the Asia-Pacific region is highly preferred; a genuine interest is essential
