Position description

This position is located in Voice of America's News Center. The position is an Interactive News Developer and is responsible for the creation of digital news products that are data-driven and/or include interactivity of daily news production.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceives, pitches and delivers interactives, data visualizations, and other news products that complement VOA reporting.
  • Uses various technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python (Interpreted Languages) to design and develop reader-facing web pages, and applications and data visualizations.
  • Helps pioneer new storytelling techniques and educates colleagues across the agency about the possibilities of digital reporting.
  • Ensures that VOA content and products are available on the devices our key audiences are currently using, and are easily adaptable to emerging technology.
  • Works closely with a wide range of journalists to present news and information simply and clearly in order to help VOA's international audiences understand complex issues.
  • Collaborates with designers and journalists to create interactive products, provides expertise on semantic HTML, CSS and JavaScript using current Web technologies and standards.
  • Uses modern open-source coding languages such as Drupal, Python, Java, and Ruby to evaluate work in order to authoritatively make recommendations for selecting contracted services and products.
  • Puts UX (user-interface design) at the fore in all decisions, ensuring that VOA products are intuitive, attractive, and easy to use by a wide audience, which helps to understand site navigation and GUI principles.
  • Works with web developers to create internal workflows that allow for easy versioning of material into multiple languages and alphabets.
  • Creates, refines or expands digital tools to help VOA journalists create engaging online content.
  • Works closely with developers in VOA Digital and VOA Designers to identify technical requirements such as platform and device compatibility, API integration needs, which languages must be supported, and how content will be updated..
  • Keeps informed of new technological developments by extensive review of the technical literature, applying relevant innovations to planned and ongoing Internet projects. Seeks out new technologies appropriate to Internet development projects targeted to a range of global audiences.

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12), which is directly related to this line of work.

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

You must demonstrate the following specialized experience within your application:

  • Experience using PHP, Python, Drupal, Java, Ruby, and/or Node.js; and the ability to make recommendations regarding services and products using the aforementioned protocols and/or languages.
  • Experience using a modern visualization library such as D3 and three.js.
  • Experience using cascading style sheets (CSS) and HTML, including emerging standards for HTML5.
