Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Operations will oversee Yamba Malawi’s financial, administrative and operations functions across offices in New York and Lilongwe. A key member of the management team, the Director of Finance and Operations will be a strong leader who is detail oriented, a self-starter and a creative problem solver. 



  • Oversee monthly reconciliation of expenditures with outsourced bookkeeping service

  • Work with Executive Director, team leaders and board to develop annual organizational and departmental budgets

  • Prepare financial statement regularly and present to the ED and Board of Directors

  • Work closely with leadership team to ensure the organization is achieving all financial targets

  • Develop financial models and projections for organization

  • Develop budgets for grant applications and donor reports on expenditures

  • Track annual revenue targets with fundraising team and adjust as needed

  • Manage bank accounts and track expenditures

  • Coordinate the annual audit process with external auditor


  • Manage and improve organization systems including technology, financial reporting, human resource management, and accounting

  • Ensure compliance with all national and international regulatory requirements

  • Serve as main liaison with pro-bono legal counsel; oversee execution of all contracts

  • Assist the Executive Director in management of the Board of Directors meetings and communications

  • Serve as the point of contact for all liability and insurance matters; coordinate and monitor all liability policies to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and adequacy to mitigate organizational risk

  • Oversee facilities and technology, ensuring efficient and comfortable daily operations

  • Oversee Salesforce database for donors and program data

  • Directly supervise Development and Operations Assistant

Human Resources

  • Oversee annual performance reviews

  • Manage payroll and employee benefits

  • Manage recruiting and hiring process for new employees and coordinate the on-boarding process

  • Foster an organizational culture that attracts and motivates an exemplary, diverse staff, supports their growth and development, and enables collaboration, continuous learning, and high performance

  • Manage employee relations and human resource issues as they arise

  • Staff development including managing professional development opportunities, retreats, etc

  • Update employee handbooks (New York and Lilongwe) as needed, orient staff to content and ensure compliance

  • Manage internship program


  • Commitment to Yamba Malawi’s mission
  • 3-5 years of senior-level work experience in non-profit administration, organizational development, project management, or related field preferred

  • Must be a logistically-oriented systems-thinker with strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to be a hands-on solutions-focused team player

  • Must be detail-oriented and possess excellent organization skills, with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet aggressive deadlines

  • Discretion, diplomacy, and the ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with integrity is critical

  • Ability to effectively communicate across offices on two different continents

  • Experience in contract negotiation and management, and stakeholder engagement

  • Knowledge of non-profit legal rules, regulations, and guidelines

  • Experience with Quickbooks and Salesforce strongly preferred

  • Strong Microsoft Excel knowledge a must

  • Supervisory experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, MBA, MPA or equivalent preferred
