Position description

Reuters, the news and media division of Thomson Reuters, is the world’s largest international multimedia news provider reaching more than one billion people every day. Reuters provides trusted business, financial, national, and international news to professionals via Thomson Reuters desktops, the world's media organizations, and directly to consumers at Reuters.com.

Reuters is seeking an enterprising reporter for our Washington bureau to cover the quickly evolving U.S. national security and foreign policy story. A record of breaking news, developing sources and producing ambitious enterprise journalism is essential.

With cybersecurity becoming a key focus of U.S. national security policy, we are particularly interested in reporters with experience in that field. The reporter will also be expected to contribute to our coverage of U.S. policy toward Iran, Russia, North Korea, China, the Middle East and other areas of the world. The ideal candidate will have – or can develop – strong sources at the White House, State Department, Congress, the Pentagon and intelligence agencies.

As the leading global news organization, Reuters needs a reporter who can work closely with bureaus around the world, sharing tips, sources and bylines with colleagues in different continents. In the Washington bureau he or she will work collaboratively with not just other foreign policy reporters but with journalists covering other beats. The foreign policy correspondent should be a self-starter, able to generate distinctive story ideas and execute them in a timely fashion, seamlessly working with other reporters and editors.

Qualifications

  • Proven skill at reporting and writing distinctive, ambitious, agenda-setting stories
  • A track record of breaking news
  • Ability to cultivate top sources
  • Proven record of fresh story ideas for feature stories and projects
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Understanding of multi-media elements to enhance stories, from graphics to pictures and video
  • At least 5 years’ experience reporting or editing at a major news organization
