Position description

As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) helps leaders to prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over 200 countries.


The sub editing and presentation of the Access China portfolio of print and electronic products within the Country Publishing division. The sub editing and publishing directly to the website of daily events-driven articles through our content management system. Managing the regional workflow through sub edit in accordance with daily, monthly and quarterly deadlines. Providing sub editing assistance to two regions (Asia; Middle East and Africa) on two days per week.


How you will contribute:

  • On-screen sub editing, eg grammar, punctuation, spelling
  • Complying with house style
  • Improving text by identifying inconsistencies and errors in both language and content, and resolving ambiguous passages in conjunction with the editor
  • Checking internal consistency of statistical data
  • Handling text, tables and charts within a custom-built template; final formatting and page layout of both print and electronic products within the template
  • Be responsible for sending both print and electronic products for final publication through the template
  • Be responsible for sub editing and publishing directly to the website of daily events-driven articles using the content management system
  • Be responsible for final quality of online events-driven articles
  • Assisting other regional sub editors (specifically, the Asia and Middle East and Africa teams)
  • Attending regional meetings
  • Liaising with the Manager, Access China to ensure an even workflow of reports
  • Handling the regional daily, monthly and quarterly schedules through sub edit
  • Liaising with the Manager, Sub Editing on regional house style


The ideal skills for this role are:

  • Degree or equivalent (ideally in English, Political Science, Politics, Economics or International Relations, or a related subject)
  • Interest in, or basic understanding of, macroeconomic analysis, politics and international affairs
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Relevant work experience, that is, currently holding the position of Sub editor
  • International commercial exposure within a publishing environment
  • Knowledge of custom-built templates, including formatting and page layout
  • Good command of the English language
  • Ability to assess the level of sub editing needed for each report 
  • Ability to detect internal inconsistencies; attention to detail
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Maintain high quality of output under pressure
  • Responsibility for formatting and page layout of reports
  • High level of numeracy
