Position description

The International Institute for Strategic Studies is a world-leading think tank on global security, political risk and military conflict with offices in London, Singapore, Manama and Washington DC. The IISS–Americas office in Washington DC plays a highly active role as a base for the IISS in the US and elsewhere in the Americas, promoting the institute and its research to relevant constituencies, servicing the individual and corporate membership, and initiating events for local audiences consistent with the IISS international reach.  

We seek to appoint a Research Analyst to support the programme on Geo-Economics, Geopolitics and Strategy. This position will work closely with the Senior Advisor for Geo-Economics and Strategy based in the IISS–Americas office in Washington DC.

Tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing research support to the Senior Advisor for Geo-Economics and Strategy, including but not limited to, research and analysis on key geo-economic issues such as: sources of geo-economic leverage and power; assessing the viability of different types of geo-economic influence; and understanding the interface between geo-economics and geo-politics;
  • Project management of the Institute’s new research project on China’s Belt & Road Initiative, which includes coordinating the activities of IISS scholars from all four IISS offices;
  • Support formulation and execution of outreach and events for the Geo-Economics, Geopolitics and Strategy Programme.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have 1–2 years of experience and an advanced degree (relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of), with some combination of experience in research support, administrative support and external relations. Mandarin language skills are preferred. They will also demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, sound judgement and discretion, and the ability to manage multiple complex tasks concurrently.
