Position description

The Fund for Peace (FFP) seeks a dynamic, motivated, and collaborative individual to join its Washington, D.C.-based team, 50% focused on business development and 50% focused on support to programmatic work, including specifically on conflict early warning and response programs in Anglophone and Francophone West Africa.

The position will be based in Washington, D.C., with the possibility of international travel to specific FFP program locations, particularly in West Africa. The programmatic component of this position will initially focus on conflict early warning and response, mainly in West Africa, although with a specific focus on the fifteen member states of the Economic Community of West African States. There will be room for growth into FFP’s other programs, including but not limited to the annual Fragile States Index.

Specific Job Duties

50% Business Development

  • Lead organizational initiatives in seeking and developing new opportunities for business.
  • Coordinate overall business development strategy, including identifying potential funders (including U.S. and foreign governments, multilateral institutions, corporations, and foundations).
  • Lead and coordinate capture where necessary.
  • Coordinate, supervise and implement proposal and grant design, development, and writing.
  • Maintain and expand FFP’s networks with current and potential funders and partners.
  • Attend key policy and networking events to represent FFP to current and potential funders and partners.

30% Program Management, Research, and Planning:

  • Perform program management functions as required, including liaising with FFP staff based in the field and local partners based in focus countries.
  • Coordinate the planning, execution, and delivery of program tasks and activities.
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports to the management and other partners as required.
  • Build and maintain relationships for FFP with government officials, local organizations, and international organizations in target countries.
  • Represent FFP at internal and external events and disseminate information about FFP’s programs and research findings.
  • Provide expertise on relevant subject matter through briefings of key officials and other relevant actors, publications, and participation in working groups, conferences and roundtable events.

20% Core Organizational Functions:

  • Backstop senior staff on critical executive-level administrative and management tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

This position is contingent upon funding.

Position reports directly to the Executive Director. Direct management and supervision responsibility may include Programs Associates, Interns, and sub-contractors.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and passion for business development.
  • Outgoing personality and a keenness to build networks.
  • Strong presentation skills and an ability to communicate effectively. (oral and written), including cross-cultural skills, media skills, and the ability to deal with counterparts at all political, social and economic levels.
  • Broad understanding of the funder landscape in the international development field.
  • Knowledge of USAID and State Department a plus. Knowledge of foreign government funders (such as DFID, GIZ) a strong plus.
  • Ability to coordinate internal and external teams to build and develop strong proposals.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with key stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • A minimum of five years of experience and progressive responsibility working in and/or on conflict or post-conflict issues.
  • Deep understanding of the dynamics of political transitions and programming to support them, strong research and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken French is strongly preferred. Proficiency in Arabic or Spanish is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate virtually with team members deployed across multiple locations and time zones.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required, particularly to transitioning environments.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate to Washington, D.C. is required, as this position will be based at FFP’s headquarters.
  • U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or the ability to obtain work authorization in the U.S. is required. Costs associated with obtaining work authorization are the sole responsibility of the applicant.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • A Master’s Degree or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in business development and substantively among the following programmatic areas: peacebuilding; conflict prevention and early warning; general political risk analysis; security & human rights; and/or responsible business practices.
  • A minimum of five (5) years graduated responsibility in program management.
  • French language proficiency is highly desired; proficiency in Arabic or Spanish is an advantage.

Physical Demands

  • Travel requiring simple living in cross-cultural setting which may include limitations in electricity and communication and modest accommodations.
  • Periods of heightened work activity and protracted work hours related to pressures of proposal and report submissions.
  • Periods of travel to remote locations.
  • Work may occasionally take place in locations which can be volatile or lack formal security infrastructure
  • Modern amenities (electrical, plumbing, air cooling) may not always be available when deployed in the field.

Salary
$63,000 – $68,000 and/or commensurate with experience
