Position description

The Sahel Alliance has been created on July 13, 2017 to coordinate the actions of its members. The Alliance aims to strengthen coordination and focus on key sectors; improve efficiency, rapidity and proximity through innovative methods; strengthen development aid accountability in the Sahel. Alliance donors are active throughout the Sahel, including in the most vulnerable zones. The Alliance focuses on supporting structures closest to populations, working most intensely with local authorities, the private sector, farmers' and village associations, and NGOs.  

The Alliance is a group of 12 donors organized around 6 thematic pillars, each of which is piloted by one of the 6 founding members: Agriculture-food security (African Development Bank); Decentralization-basic Services (Germany); Youth employability (France); Energy and climate (World Bank); Governance (UNDP - United Nations Development Programme); Internal security (European Union).

The Sahel Alliance Coordination Unit, based for the past year at the Agence Française du Dévelopement (AFD) ensures the management and coordination of the Alliance and will be passed on to the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in 2019-2020, in the context of a rotating mandate. The Coordination unit will be based in Brussels.

Your tasks

The Alliance has designated "Sahel Alliance Spokespersons" in each of the five countries of the G5 Sahel. Their role is to animate and facilitate the Sahel Alliance in the countries, to promote its principles and to ensure a smooth dialogue among partners and with the national partner governments. A network of five young professionals (the "Sahel Alliance Youth" network) is planned to be recruited and established, one in each G5 country - to support the spokespersons. 

Provision of support for the operationalization of the Sahel Alliance in the field

  • Monitor key projects
  • Monitor emergency development projects
  • Organise portfolio reviews and sectorial reviews
  • Further development of donor modalities

Support of the coordination and collaboration of Sahel Alliance members and G5 country partners

  • Coordinate and supervise the young professionals network in the field
  • Plan, animate, and coordinate the action of young professionals in the field
  • Monitor and report on activities


  • Master's degree in development, economics, international relations, or political science
  • Working experience with a development institution member of the Sahel Alliance
  • 5 years' experience in network or stakeholder management
  • Prior experience in donor coordination and project monitoring would be an advantage
  • Excellent skills in communication
  • Ability to work without too close supervision
  • High affinity to teamwork
  • Good knowledge of the cultural, political, and economic context of the Sahel region
  • Proficiency in English and French (both writing and speaking); fluency in German is an asset
