Position description

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Technology Strategy Associate.

Overview of the Human Rights Foundation

HRF is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies. Our work includes effective campaigns to free political prisoners, world-class events such as the Oslo Freedom Forum, and programs such as Flash Drives for Freedom that publicize human rights violators and directly support dissidents and human rights defenders at risk. HRF is exploring the positive and negative impact of frontier technology on civil liberties, privacy, and digital freedom.

Overview of the position

The Technology Strategy Associate will focus on the technology angle of HRF’s partnerships, events, programs, and communications. This position reports directly to the Chief Strategy Officer and will work alongside colleagues in the policy, events, development, and communications departments. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in the intersection of technology and human rights and in areas such as: mass surveillance, data privacy, encryption, telecommunications, bitcoin, and decentralized networks. Over time, this candidate will ideally gain the ability to do writing and speaking on behalf of HRF at the intersection of technology and freedom with the goal of forging new partnerships, bringing on sponsors, and raising funds. The typical day may include typing up several technology partnership memos, attending and making connections at a tech event in San Francisco, coordinating phone calls and meetings, and reviewing newsletters at the intersection of technology and human rights for HRF opportunities.

  • Help bring tech companies, charitable foundations, family offices, and relevant investors and businesses to HRF events like the Oslo Freedom Forum as participants, partners, and sponsors
  • Draft letters of interest, grant proposals, and grant reports related to HRF work
  • Assist with technology-related research for communications and policy departments
  • Expand HRF's technology prospect pipeline and convert existing prospective contacts to partners, collaborators, or supporters

  • An understanding of and affinity for HRF’s mission
  • A passion for learning more about the intersection of technology and human rights
  • Self-motivated team player with a high sense of urgency and ability to handle multiple projects at once
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral
  • A willingness to travel domestically and internationally for events and programs
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; possess a friendly, professional demeanor, and positive phone presence
  • A demonstrated history of publishing articles and/or incisive social media posts is preferred
