International Justice Program

New York Office

The International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance to the team. The International Justice Program works to shape investigations, bring about arrest and cooperation, and advocate for effective justice mechanisms. This is an administrative – not legal – position. The position is based in New York and reports to the Director of the International Justice Program, based in New York. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will take up this position in July 2019.

Responsibilities:

1. Providing day-to-day administrative support to International Justice Program staff such as scheduling, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, and responding to requests for information; 

2. Maintaining communication among HRW’s offices, global staff, and external partners;

3. Preparing, drafting, editing, formatting, and distributing materials such as news releases, reports, letters, charts, briefing papers, op eds, publications, and web content;

4. Assisting with research, electronic clipping, wires, and translations;

5. Organizing and assisting with events;

6. Coordinating fundraising initiatives and tracking donors;

7. Assisting with the recruitment, supervision, and mentoring of interns;

8. Recording, tracking, and processing departmental finances; and

9. Carrying out other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, social science, or a related field is required. 

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required. Previous work, internship, or volunteer experience in international justice and/or human rights is highly desirable.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required. 

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; proficiency in other languages, in particular French, is highly desirable.

3. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required. 

4. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.

5. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations is required.

6. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.

7. Strong interest in international human rights and international justice is preferred. 

 

Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at $47,436. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year.
