Position description

BRAC’s Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative (UPGI) seeks a highly motivated and entrepreneurial candidate to help grow our advocacy and public outreach to advance our mission. We are looking for an agile, strategic thinker who is a skilled communicator, fast learner, intellectually curious and creative, with strong work experience in the developing world and a commitment to social justice.

The Communications Manager will join a leadership team for the growing UPGI, reporting directly to the Managing Director of UPGI with one direct report: Senior Communications Associate. We are a small and mighty team with a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-things-done work ethic. The Communications Manager will be responsible for cultivating and managing key relationships and promoting UPGI through partnerships, events, media placements, as well as digital and print marketing efforts.

As a member of the global UPGI team, which is housed at BRAC USA, the Communications Manager will coordinate closely with the Senior Manager for Communications, BRAC USA, as well as relevant communications colleagues in Dhaka and other BRAC countries, to ensure consistency in messaging and leveraging of communication efforts.

 

Position Responsibilities

 Public relations and outreach:

  • Work across the UPGI team and with BRAC entities to develop an advocacy communications strategy for BRAC UPGI in keeping with organizational goals and metrics.
  • Develop outreach strategies and manage staff to boost visibility and develop ongoing stakeholder engagement through BRAC UPGI channels.

Promotion and advocacy of BRAC UPGI work:

  • Support the implementation and ongoing development of an advocacy and communications strategy for BRAC’s Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative, including brand development, messaging and outreach.
  • Position BRAC UPGI as a thought leader and expert in the international development space through targeted promotion of Graduation as a sustainable solution to extreme poverty, with a focus on shaping views of opinion leaders and partnership building.
  • Coach and support staff to develop presentations, speeches and talking points for BRAC UPGI leadership.
  • Identify and coordinate relevant opportunities for speaking engagements.
  • Develop media outreach strategy and support staff to create cultivation systems used across BRAC to deepen relationships with journalists, policymakers and thought leaders.
  • Manage all digital properties of UPGI, including website and social channels.
  • Manage consultants as necessary to develop content, including content strategy.
  • Manage contracts and procurement processes for relevant vendors.

 Develop collateral to cultivate institutional partners:

  • Assist with cultivation of donors and fundraising proposals for grant opportunities that contain a significant communications or marketing component.
  • Work closely with program teams to ensure strong relationships with institutional partners and delivery of communications reporting requirements.

Qualifications

The candidate for Communications Manager should have a deep and long-standing commitment to international development, economic empowerment and advocacy, coupled with superior communication skills.

Additionally, s/he will have the following attributes:

Education: Bachelor's degree in international relations, government, journalism, law, social sciences or a related field.

Experience: A minimum of seven to ten years of relevant international development or related issues.  Extensive experience in advocacy/media/public relations/partnership development are required.

 

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent and proven knowledge of the political, media, and development landscape.
  • Fluency in English, with excellent public speaking skills and a passion for writing and content development. Speaking and writing skills in other languages are desirable.
  • Knowledge of and experience working in international development.
  • Ability to follow numerous technical international development issues in a rigorous and nuanced manner.
  • Ability to think strategically about the media environment and experience speaking with the media and cultivating relationships with journalists.
  • Ability to think strategically about how to use print, electronic and social media as well as the ability to write opinion pieces, and official letters.
  • Experience using research and other data to effectively develop outreach and public relations strategies
  • Strong initiative and follow-through, ability to shift priorities according to international news developments and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to creating high quality products
  • Working knowledge of current digital and social tools.
  • Prior experience working with BRAC or similar multi-faceted organization is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a geographically dispersed team.
