Position description

A non-partisan, non-profit organization, Intelligence Squared U.S. addresses a fundamental problem in America: the extreme polarization of our nation and our politics. Our mission is to restore critical thinking, facts, reason, and civility to public discourse. Through a series of Oxford-style debates, IQ2US provides a critical forum for balanced and intelligent discussion of issues ranging from domestic and foreign policy to cultural trends and technological innovations. IQ2US debates are recorded in front of a live audience and distributed through public radio, podcast, and a number of digital streaming platforms.


The Researcher will work with the IQ2US Editorial Team to produce research for the debates. This person will conduct in-depth research for upcoming debates, including preparing research briefings and writing copy that is clear, factual, and balanced. The ideal candidate is deeply committed to promoting a true competition of ideas and intellectual diversity in American public discourse. This candidate has a strong work ethic, thrives under tight deadlines, regularly consumes news from a wide variety of sources, and possesses the ability to think deeply and critically about a range of topics, including foreign policy, economics, politics, sports, culture, and technology. This position requires the ability to set aside personal political beliefs and to seek intellectually valid ideas and arguments from across the political spectrum. 

Position Responsibilities

  • Compile research on various topics and speakers 
  • Draft copy on debate topics for a variety of platforms
  • Maintain the “Briefing Room” section of the IQ2US website
  • Proofread and fact-check copy for internal and external use 
  • Support live debates, post-debate dinners, and receptions
  • Manage administrative tasks for the research department 
  • Work on special projects as assigned


  • Intellectual curiosity and a passion for engaging viewpoints from across the political spectrum 
  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or journalism 
  • A minimum of four years of related work experience (think tanks or media preferred) 
  • Excellent journalistic writing ability, research skills, and strong editorial judgment
  • Clear and concise writing skills, including the ability to summarize complex information 
  • Strong proofreading skills, accuracy, and attention to detail
  • An innate curiosity and deep interest in continued learning, current events, pursuit of inventive new ideas in multiple formats
  • Strong commitment to promoting balanced public discourse and seeking intellectually respectable arguments on both sides of a given debate 
  • The ability to work independently, multi-task, and meet deadlines
  • Must thrive under deadline pressure and simultaneously manage multiple priorities 
  • Ability to work late evenings on show days; periodic travel is required
