Fact Checker, The New Yorker
The Fact Checker will be part of a team with primary responsibility for the accuracy and thoroughness of the editorial content of The New Yorker, a publication that covers national and international affairs, culture, tech, and science. The fact-checking department is known for its high standards. Candidates should be familiar with the range of topics covered by The New Yorker, both online and in the print magazine. This role entails working diplomatically with writers, editors, and sources on complex subjects and on tight deadlines.
Keep continuously abreast of developments in national and international politics, science, and culture
Quickly analyze a manuscript for factual errors, logical flaws, and significant omissions
Efficiently examine a writer’s sources and, where necessary, to identify additional documents and/or sources.
Read through writers documents, interview sources, and accurately distill relevant information to the piece.
Effectively work with a team of writers, copy editors, and editors across the publication.
Duties assigned may apply to the print magazine and/or the web.
Additional miscellaneous duties as assigned by the direct manager.
A strong understanding of ethical reporting standards and practices
A generalist’s interest in world and national affairs and a scholar’s aptitude for precision
An interest in a broad range of cultural subjects
Diplomatic skills sufficient to be able to work successfully with a range of people in complex situations
Fluency in a second language is preferred but not required
Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays
