Position description

Tentative starting date: 1 September 2017

Hand-over period: There will be a hand-over period of approximately two months with the out-going Executive Director.

Main responsibilities

·      Act as an ambassador for and lead the organisation, steer its programmes, and ensure the successful implementation of all activities through a clear vision and sound, experienced management;

·      Implement UPR Info’s strategy for 2017-2019, based on its Agenda for change, ensuring full realisation of organisational and policy objectives;

·      Expand the programmes, activities and outreach of the organisation;

·      Lead and implement the organisation’s policy work on the UPR process, including its strategic priorities around the strengthening of the mechanism and work with the relevant actors to this end (States, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, CSOs, academics, etc);

·      Ensure the financial development of the organisation, with a strong focus on fundraising;

·      Motivate and lead a team of 7+ staff and supervise its work;

·      Manage the day-to-day functioning of a dynamic team;

·      Oversee the finances, including audited reports and the reporting to donors;

·      Engage with and report to the Executive Board and President to provide them with an accurate view of the organisation’s position, including opportunities and challenges;

·      Ensure effective collaboration, communication, and coordination among the two offices (Geneva and Nairobi) and supervise the Africa office; and

·      Represent the organisation publicly with donors and partners, including Permanent Missions, United Nations (UN) agencies, civil society organisations (CSOs), and national human rights institutions (NHRIs).



  • Masters’ degree in international law, human rights, international relations, development, social sciences or other relevant academic field (or relevant experience in lieu of Masters).


  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in a non-governmental organisation;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in organisational management, demonstrated ability to lead, oversee and collaborate with staff;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the field of human rights;
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising and organisational development;
  • Experience with managing staff in different offices;
  • Excellent knowledge of the UN Human Rights system, including the UPR and the Human Rights Council;
  • Previous experience with the UPR will be considered a strong asset;
  • Previous experience in Geneva will be considered an asset.


·      Fluent in written and spoken English;

·      Excellent command of French;


·      Excellent knowledge of the international human rights architecture, committed to supporting universality, indivisibility, inalienability, interdependency, and interrelationship of human rights;

·      Great understanding of diplomacy and the importance of cooperation as tools to advance human rights, strong problem-solving and negotiation skills;

·      Effective and persuasive leadership, comfortable with all levels of staff in all circumstances, transparent and high integrity leadership;

·      Outstanding interpersonal skills, positive attitude, strategic thinking and multi-tasking ability; 

·      Ability to work with flexible hours, under tight timelines and on multiple agendas simultaneously;

·      Excellent communication skills and strong public speaking ability; and

·      Ability to interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, good networking and advocacy skills with various stakeholders (government officials, diplomats, CSOs, NHRIs, media, etc.).
