Just Security 2020 Program

The Henry L. Stimson Center (Stimson) is seeking a full-time Research Associate to support the Just Security 2020 Program through both research and administrative project activities.

Just Security 2020 Program co-chaired by Madeleine Albright (former US Secretary of State) and Ibrahim Gambari (former  Minister of External Affairs of Nigeria), released its flagship report, Confronting the Crisis of Global Governance.  Looking toward the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in 2020, it underscored the need for new tools to manage the world's most pressing problems, from violent conflict and climate change to the "hyperconnected" global economy and stressed the need to build justice as well as security. "Just Security" is not only a matter of fundamental fairness but a way to combat the alienation that increases receptivity to violent extremist thought. Emphasizing the intersection of security and justice in global governance, Just Security 2020 program aims to establish a broad-based international coalition of state and non-state actors to pursue key Commission recommendations and related global governance reform. Major activities to be undertaken in 2019 and beyond include:

  • Convening track 1.5 global policy dialogues to promote consensus on priority global governance reform innovations;
  • Building a robust research and policy analysis component to prepare detailed policy reports, background briefs, and action plans for each global policy dialogue, track the progress of policy implementation, and promote a companion edited volume to the original Commission Report; and
  • Standing up a new Platform on Global Security, Justice & Governance Reform to sustain relationships and promote results of the global policy dialogues.

Essential Functions:

  • Help organize the global policy dialogues: plan and execute event logistics, make travel arrangements, prepare event materials, track event expenses, communicate with participants, etc.
  • Assist in drafting reports, articles and help contribute content to the Just Security 2020 program's Platform on Global Security, Justice & Governance Reform website;
  • Contribute to the preparation of Just Security 2020 Program deliverables, such as research products, public events, podcasts, video content, listserv management, and social media outreach (if you have technical skills, you should let us know);
  • Assist with prospective funder research and preparation of funding proposals and funding reports;
  • Provide general program support and administration; and
  • Assist in managing the intern(s).

Thanks for kindly helping to spread the word about this new opening at Stimson, especially among recent graduates!
