Position description

Newsnight is looking to appoint an Assistant Editor to join the flagship programme’s senior editorial team. 

Coming at the end of a crowded news schedule, Newsnight aims to tackle the big stories of the day in greater depth than other outlets, to break its own stories with original reporting and news-making interviews, and to provide the most intelligent and original take on the news. It should be thought provoking, intelligent, authoritative, relevant and distinctive.

Main Responsibilities

The Assistant Editor will support the Editor and two Deputy Editors on Newsnight in driving the journalism and producing the nightly programme and its digital content.  Assistant Editors are key senior staff on the programme, running the daily output and occasionally taking charge of longer term coverage and specials.

You will monitor and ensure the quality of output, ensuring that journalistic standards are maintained and also help to drive Newsnight’s digital output, working with the digital team to produce innovate and bespoke online content. You will also co-ordinate the booking of guests, drive the editorial line and provide direction to producers and liaise with presenters.

When acting as output Editor, you will drive the news agenda of the day - to originate and develop lively and engaging programmes which reflect the significant events, as well as key issues and trends in news and current affairs.

Are you the right candidate?

Candidates should have the following:-  

  • In depth knowledge of British politics, society, culture and history.  Ability to apply such knowledge to news and current affairs journalism of the highest quality and complexity.
  • In depth knowledge of international affairs and an ability to analyse developments in diverse areas such as international politics, diplomacy, society and culture
  • Strong TV-making skills and imagination to ensure that Newsnight’s output remains visually innovative and original
  • Ideas and initiative to contribute to planning and the development of Newsnight’s output
  • Editorial awareness and judgement which reflects BBC and BBC News editorial policy.
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to embrace new ways of working, new technology, and promote this to staff
  • Ability to make major decisions with authority and under pressure
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team of journalists and to develop their skills
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and to develop skills required to assist in the management of programme budgets
  • Help to implement the programme’s digital strategy.
