Newsnight is looking to appoint an Assistant Editor to join the flagship programme’s senior editorial team.
Coming at the end of a crowded news schedule, Newsnight aims to tackle the big stories of the day in greater depth than other outlets, to break its own stories with original reporting and news-making interviews, and to provide the most intelligent and original take on the news. It should be thought provoking, intelligent, authoritative, relevant and distinctive.
The Assistant Editor will support the Editor and two Deputy Editors on Newsnight in driving the journalism and producing the nightly programme and its digital content. Assistant Editors are key senior staff on the programme, running the daily output and occasionally taking charge of longer term coverage and specials.
You will monitor and ensure the quality of output, ensuring that journalistic standards are maintained and also help to drive Newsnight’s digital output, working with the digital team to produce innovate and bespoke online content. You will also co-ordinate the booking of guests, drive the editorial line and provide direction to producers and liaise with presenters.
When acting as output Editor, you will drive the news agenda of the day - to originate and develop lively and engaging programmes which reflect the significant events, as well as key issues and trends in news and current affairs.
