Position description

GMF Technology Team is seeking a trainee for Summer 2025 to assist with research and operational tasks for the team. The trainee will be responsible for tracking and compiling research on US and EU technology policy, especially AI. The trainee will assist with operational tasks for the planning of study tours slated to occur in late 2025 and early 2026, including recruitment of high-level American and European politicians, coordination of travel itineraries, and management of contracts.

Trainees will benefit from exposure to GMF’s network, and will gain valuable experience in organizing policy events and networking for high-level policymakers as well as logistical, research, and writing experiences. Traineeships will be a mix of in-person and remote work, and trainees must maintain an address in the Washington DC, Virginia, or Maryland area and be eligible to work in the United States.

Trainees are paid $17.50 an hour and are offered an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional experience for those interested in a career in public policy or international affairs. 

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Logistical support for planning study tours and events.
  • Monitor and research US and EU technology policy, especially AI, data, and emerging technologies.
  • Provide research and writing support for GMF Tech Team staff and products for internal team and project preparations, including daily news clips.
  • Producing summaries of hearings and events relevant to GMF Tech Team’s work. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional organizational habits and management skills, with superb attention to detail and an ability to meet multiple deadlines and play a central role in the operation of a small and growing team
  • Strong event planning and logistical skills 
  • Demonstrable interest or background in technology, democracy, and authoritarianism, as well as a familiarity w/ the GMF Technology Program work analyzing the AI ecosystem
  • Strong computer and database management skills, including experience with Microsoft products and a demonstrable interest in building deep knowledge of GMF systems such as Dynamics, Concept, NetSuite, InDesign, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, Zoom, and others
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and editing skills in English. European language(s) a plus.
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working independently. 
    • Previous experience in a think tank, foundation, NGO, government body, media outlet, or similar organization preferred. 
    • Must be eligible to work in the United Staes.

Start and Length of Traineeship:

  • Preferred start and end: 6/2/25 – 8/15/25
  • Preferred time commitment: 35 hours per week, Monday–Friday between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST. Part time candidates will also be considered.
