The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures that there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principles humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.
These positions are located UN OCHA Qatar-Doha which is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. providing support related to coordination and communication engagement in humanitarian action.
This internship is for an initial period of three months in person with a maximum extend to six months
1. Support the monitoring, analysis, and reporting on humanitarian action or disaster.
2. Supports advocacy initiatives on issues related to humanitarian needs through the collection of information, liaison with humanitarian partners, government officials, the media, etc.
3. Actively engages in working groups, meetings, conferences, and consultations with other agencies and partners on humanitarian and emergency response matters.
4. Assisting in the daily work of the office including the development of road map, and coordination with other branches of OCHA.
5. Provision of operations and logistics support.
6.Contributes to the various reports, documents and communications, e.g. drafts sections of surveys, background papers, parliamentary documents, briefings, case studies, presentations, correspondence, taking notes, talking points, etc.
7. Prepare information materials for humanitarian advocacy and sharing with other partners.
8. Performs other duties as required
To qualify for an internship with the UN Internship programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
Any academic or practical experience in humanitarian affairs issues including humanitarian financing mechanisms, funding trends, gender equality, programming, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development and/or human rights is desirable.
Personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations and ability to interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds is required.
