Position description

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. It works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities, promoting urbanization as a transformative force for reducing inequality, discrimination, and poverty.

UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS), based in Cairo since 2011, provides technical cooperation and capacity building for 18 countries across the Arab region. It promotes and implements policies, programs, and projects in UN-Habitat’s focus areas at regional, national, and local levels.

UN-Habitat Egypt Programme, established in 2005, supports national counterparts through:

  • Urban planning and design
  • Urban policies, legislation, and governance
  • Urban basic services and mobility

This internship is located in the Egypt country programme, Cairo duty station, under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Country Programme Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Country Office in designing and formulating the Country Strategy and technical cooperation (TC) activities.
  • Assist with project identification and development based on demand.
  • Map resources and partnerships.
  • Support UN-Habitat’s participation in development partners’ technical working groups.
  • Collect and consolidate information for UNSDCF and periodic reports.
  • Participate in technical working groups, seminars, conferences, and prepare meeting briefs.
  • Compile best practices and lessons learned on UN-Habitat thematic areas.
  • Organize and report on meetings, workshops, and similar activities.
  • Support communication of UN-Habitat Egypt initiatives and activities.
  • Assist in managing social media platforms for the Country Office.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Qualifications/Special Skills

Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher).
  • Be in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree.

Other requirements:

  • Computer literacy in standard applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong interest in the work of the UN and commitment to the UN Charter.
  • Ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Preferred fields of study: mass communication, journalism, economics, literature, political science, business administration, urban engineering, or other relevant social sciences.

Desirable:

  • Experience organizing or participating in urban-related events.
  • Relevant coursework, projects, or internships in urban planning, policy development, or communication.

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

Intern Specific Text:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Interns are responsible for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the internship country may require appropriate visa and authorization.
  • Successful candidates must discuss visa requirements prior to accepting the offer.
