Pay Range

$168,780 - $214,032 Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

The Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) has an immediate need for a Senior Analyst - Center for Global Security Research to conduct research regarding one of the five main research thrust areas at the center—major power rivalry and conflict, new regional challengers and challenges, toward deterrence strategy 3.0, the future of long-term competitive strategies, and the future of cooperative strategies to reduce global dangers. The position will be under the Center for Global Security Research, Director's Office.

In this role you will 

  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis on complex 21st century national security-related research topics in line with CGSR research thrust areas.
  • Generate single-authored papers, multi-authored papers, study group reports, and other analytical products, including both formal and informal presentations.
  • Build multidisciplinary teams with internal and external subject matter experts to design and execute research projects and tasks.
  • Contribute to the Center’s larger agenda by participating in the design of the research program, by actively engaging in center-organized events, and by providing substantive feedback on the work of others.
  • Support the analytical work of other internal stakeholders at LLNL as required.
  • Represent CGSR and the lab by contributing expertise to projects elsewhere in the lab, at other national security laboratories, at NNSA and DOE, and elsewhere in the think tank and academic community.
  • Mentor postdocs and research associates at the center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Advanced degree in political science, international relations, history, the physical or life sciences, engineering, regional or area studies, or a related field.
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas: analysis of technical issues in international security, experience in U.S. foreign affairs in the executive or legislative branch, relevant experience working in the intelligence, military, academia, or the think tank community.
  • A strong publication track record on national security policy-related topics.
  • Significant experience developing and presenting independent research projects, including publication of peer-reviewed literature. Ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment to achieve results in a timely manner using proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively when presenting and explaining technical information.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to clearly and concisely convey complex analyses to advise decision-makers
  • Attention to detail, rigorous logic skills, and familiarity with advanced analytic tools and methodologies such as net assessment and analytic wargaming.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with working with technical staff in the physical sciences and engineering.
  • Experience working on classified issues.
