About EFI Foundation

The EFI Foundation is a Washington-based registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to harnessing the power of technology and policy innovation to accelerate the clean energy transition. Led by principals with decades of experience and proven track records in government, academia, and the private sector, EFIF produces objective, fact-based, and rigorous analysis supported by a multidisciplinary network of experts.

EFIF was founded by Ernest J. Moniz, who served as the thirteenth United States Secretary of Energy (2013-2017) during the Obama Administration. Former Secretary Moniz also serves as the co-chair of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and holds a position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Former Secretary Moniz and other principals of EFIF also are principals of EJM Associates, LLC, a Washington-based business consultancy.

About EJM Associates LLC (EJM)

EJM Associates is a strategic consulting firm founded and directly managed by former Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz. We advise clients on a range of energy policy, innovation, and security issues to help them navigate the transition to a global clean energy economy.

This role may be expected to perform work for EJM, consistent with their job description.

Summary

The EFI Foundation is seeking a Content Operations Manager (COM) to guide editorial products, advise on production timeframes, and deconflict the scheduling of report releases and eternal events. The COM will be a key player in strategic communications planning to ensure EFIF’s work reaches and resonates with target audiences (policymakers, nonprofits, energy industry stakeholders, etc.). This position reports to the Communications team leadership.

The ideal candidate should have editorial project management experience, along with a proven ability to perform under pressure, communicate effectively with senior leadership, and provide mentorship and leadership to junior staff. You will effectively function as a managing editor for all EFIF public content.

This is not an entry-level position. Candidates must have at least six years of relevant experience in a paid position. The EFI Foundation’s work includes thought leadership and research on topics such as clean hydrogen, next generation nuclear power, carbon dioxide removal, usage and storage, battery development, and renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. EFIF’s work also promotes innovation in business models, technology and organizational structures (Advocating new and revised functions for the U.S. Department of Energy, for example).

This is a hybrid position, and candidates must be in -- or willing to relocate -- to the Washington, D.C. area. As of May 2025, we work in the office at least Tuesday through Thursday.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Lead day-to-day editorial and publication processes for EFIF, including pitching content ideas, contributing to the EFIF blog, assigning writing tasks, and setting publication priorities.
  • Ensure organization-wide consistency of the EFIF editorial style guide.
  • Lead weekly meetings with the research team to keep staff updated on publications and project timelines.
  • Lead the planning and execution of the EFIF Annual Report, which is targeted for completion each December.
  • Manage the publication tracker and schedules for reports and other projects, recognizing the need to be aware of resource deployments that may conflict with content releases (which include public and private workshops, as well as thought leadership events.)
  • Manage, write and edit items for EFIF email marketing efforts (including the monthly newsletter) and work with the digital associate to track impact and reach.
  • Collaborate with research teams to plan, edit, and assemble content for both print and digital formats.
  • Guide blog posts, event promotional materials, report summaries, media alerts, website content, and fact sheets.
  • Copyedit materials produced by team members according to EFIF’s Style Guide and AP Style, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and effective framing.
  • Manage contractors and freelancers supporting EFIF’s design, copyediting, and publication needs.
  • Work closely with senior leadership and communications team to develop and pitch opinion pieces in tier one outlets.
  • Assist in generating social media content for LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Blue Sky, and help manage social media accounts, contributing to engagement strategies.
  • Assist in the development of monthly impact reports on communications and marketing analytics, including social media metrics, website traffic, and email engagement.
  • Help create and maintain databases for content distribution to energy stakeholders, influencers, reporters, and policymakers.
  • Occasionally staff the Executive team, which may involve travel.

Who You Are

  • An adaptable communicator: You can effectively convey messages to different audiences, from senior leadership to external stakeholders.
  • Collaborative: You understand the value of teamwork and leverage it to achieve goals.
  • Organized: You can manage complex projects and schedules, motivating others to stay on track.
  • Detail-oriented: You can be trusted to copyedit publications and ensure polished final drafts.
  • Protector of standards: You will ensure quality work by setting expectations on the structure of written materials and give constructive feedback to those having difficulty delivering clear, concise explanatory text.

What You’ll Need

  • A degree in Communications, Journalism, Energy or a related field. An MA in these fields will be a competitive advantage but is not required.
  • 6+ years of post-graduation professional experience in communications, journalism, or editorial work.
  • Experience working with research/technical teams to produce strategic communications.
  • Strong copyediting skills (AP and/or Chicago Style, grammar, punctuation).
  • A strategic communications mindset, preferably with experience in energy-related campaigns.
  • Experience with social media, mass mailings (Constant Contact, MailChimp, Salesforce), website management (WordPress), and basic graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe).
  • U.S. citizenship or authorization to reside and work in the United States

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. EFI is dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
