Position description
The American Waterways Operators, the national trade association for the tugboat, towboat, and barge industry, is looking for an experienced professional to join our legislative affairs team. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience managing a portfolio of public policy issues on Capitol Hill, at the Senior Legislative Assistant or Legislative Director level, or with a corporation or trade association. Must have good relationships with Congressional staff on both sides of the aisle, and a familiarity with the committee process. Essential Responsibilities:
- Monitor and track legislative developments to stay informed of commerce, transportation and maritime issues relevant to AWO membership.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders, including Congressional staff, AWO members and coalition partners.
- Build legislative support for AWO objectives on Capitol Hill.
- Draft statements, issue briefs, talking points, fact sheets, legislative support letters, and other material as necessary.
- Attend hearings, committee meetings and fundraisers.
- Support the development of strategic communications plans that support AWO advocacy priorities.
- Monitor and respond quickly to legislative and political issues that impact AWO members.
- Integrate into the AWO PAC process.
- Provide members and colleagues with timely updates on critical industry issues.
- Work collaboratively, transparently, and cross-functionally with colleagues.
Required Qualifications:
- Highly effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate within a team.
- Ability to quickly learn the issues and policies impacting the interests of AWO’s members.
- Demonstrated political acumen and effectiveness in sensitive situations.
- Motivated self-starter who is comfortable working independently.
- Effective project and time management skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple issues and tasks.
- Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of public policy experience, including familiarity with legislative and committee processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with policy areas that impact the domestic maritime industry and its environment.
- Experience with campaigns and understanding of how to direct an advocacy campaign to influence policy outcomes.
- Ability to use technology to communicate effectively.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range and title are negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience: $120,000-$160,000 with competitive benefits, including 200 hours paid time off, vested 401(k) with matching, medical/dental/vision, and 160 hours paid parental leave.
