Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting

  • The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.
  • UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system.
  • Works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities.
  • Promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force, reducing inequality, discrimination, and poverty.
  • The 2026–2029 Strategic Plan focuses on access to adequate housing, land, and basic services, including transformation of informal settlements and slums.
  • The Human Rights and Social Inclusion (HRSI) Unit mainstreams safety, human rights, and inclusion principles across all UN-Habitat programming and normative work.
  • Supports participation of marginalized and underrepresented populations, such as women, youth, children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and indigenous peoples.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of a communication strategy for the HRSI Unit, liaising with UN-Habitat’s Communications and Media Section for review and approval.
  • Develop and curate inclusive content for social media, newsletters, articles, blog posts, and website updates to promote human rights and social inclusion.
  • Create human-interest stories highlighting the impact of HRSI’s work.
  • Assist with internal and external reporting using data visualization, infographics, presentations, and other communication materials.
  • Support video production and editing for advocacy and awareness as needed.
  • Organize and support capacity building events, including Community of Practice sessions and Expert Group Meetings.
  • Engage with media including preparing press releases, media kits, webinars, campaigns, and public events related to human rights and social inclusion.
  • Liaise with HRSI team to map key resources on digital accessibility, track media coverage relevant to HRSI, and analyze social media metrics.
  • Prepare communication reports and summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct research on best practices in communication for social inclusion and urban safety.
  • Provide additional support to HRSI Unit team members as required.
  • Internship can be remote or in-person based on availability and needs, with remote interns expected to be available for meetings during EAT work hours to ensure communication flow.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in a graduate program (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
    • Graduated with Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD or equivalent
  • Computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Keen interest in United Nations work and commitment to the UN Charter ideals.
  • Ability to interact successfully with people of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Preferred fields: Communication studies, Journalism, Media, Development Studies, Urban Studies or equivalent.

  • Must provide official proof of academic status or completion at later stage.
  • Proficiency required in communication strategy development, article and newsletter drafting.
  • Proficiency in data visualization and graphic design is required.

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

  • Previous UN internship experience should be indicated with entity and dates.

  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living costs are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
