POSITION SUMMARY   
The Digital Communications Officer will play an essential role in strategic planning, web design and oversight, managing multiple communications workstreams and consultants, and actively collaborating across Freedom House teams. The position reports to the Public Relations Director. This position is part of the collective bargaining unit and is therefore union eligible. Terms and conditions of employment, including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and working conditions, may be governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND EXPECTATIONS: 

Website 

  • Regularly update and maintain Freedom House’s website content, including research projects, blogs, statements, events, and other materials as needed, in line with the organization’s editorial calendar. 

  • Serve as a point-of-contact for Freedom House’s external web vendor to coordinate and assist with backend development projects. 

  • Record key metrics weekly using Google Analytics and report relevant updates to Comms and Executive leadership. 

  • Manage Freedom House’s media library, including coordinating photograph purchases and review with cross-pillar stakeholders. 

Email  Marketing 

  • Draft and distribute Freedom House’s email newsletter via Pardot, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, timely news, and key campaigns.  

  • Monitor email performance metrics and use insights to improve content, layout, and targeting strategies over time.  

  • Manage and update marketing contact lists, segment audiences, and ensure data hygiene across email databases.

  • Support other email distribution as needed, including rapid-response messages, press release and executive statements, fundraising appeals, event invitations, and advocacy outreach. 

Other Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Oversee production timeline of web, social, and pdf assets around major report releases and launches. 

  • Stay current on communications best practices at large and within the nonprofit, democracy, international relations, and human rights spaces. 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time. 

  • Support crosscutting teams, with a demonstrated ability to contribute to broader marketing and communication initiatives. 

  • Serve as a backup point of contact for media relations, social media support, and ad hoc surge capacity for drafting written materials (statements, social media, press releases, etc). 

  • Performs additional duties as assigned, within the role’s scope and aligned with the skillset and qualifications. 

Qualifications

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or a related field required. Experience and/or education in international relations is strongly preferred.  

Experience

  • At least 5 years of relevant communications experience, preferably in nonprofit, agency, and/or public policy settings. 

  • Proven experience with understanding of website best practices, including search engine optimization. 

  • At least three years of experience in/on the democracy, human rights, and/or civic space is highly desirable . 

Technical Skills and Abilities: 

  • Excellent written communication skills in English, and strong copywriting and proofreading skills.  

  • Experience with WordPress, Drupal, or other content management systems required. 

  • Strong organizational, management, and planning skills.  

  • Strong attention to detail . 

  • Demonstrated sound judgment in problem-solving and decision-making. 

  • Strong ability to manage time, multi-task, and meet tight and sometimes unpredictable deadlines. 

  • Must have strong analytical skills to analyze metrics and create reports.  

  • Graphic design and video/photo editing skill a plus. 

  • Familiarity with Canva, the Adobe Creative Cloud and the full Microsoft Office Suite, or similar software.
