Vice President, Global Biological Policy and Programs (NTI | bio)
NTI—a global security organization driving systemic solutions to nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats imperiling humanity—is seeking a seasoned professional to lead Global Biological Policy and Programs (NTI | bio) as Vice President.
This highly experienced and dynamic Vice President should be a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills, a strong team player, and have a passion for reducing biological risks.
Working with executive leadership, peers, and the NTI | bio team, the Vice President shapes and drives NTI’s engagements with international experts and decision-makers across the bioscience and biotechnology, public health, and security sectors. The Vice President drives systemic solutions to address urgent biological risks, including those arising from rapid technological advancement, weakening international norms against bioweapons, and persistent gaps in pandemic preparedness.
This position reports to the CEO and supervises a team of nine. This is a full-time position working in Washington, DC.
Key responsibilities:
- Strategic Vision: Develop the vision and oversee strategic implementation of all projects that align with NTI | bio’s mission to reduce biological threats imperiling humanity.
- Expert Voice: Represent NTI as a leading authority and spokesperson on biological threat reduction, biological security, global health security, disease surveillance, emerging biotechnologies, dual-use research of concern in the life sciences, biodefense, and related topics.
- Team Leadership: Recruit, develop, and supervise NTI | bio program staff and consultants to accomplish program goals. Establish performance objectives and evaluation criteria for NTI | bio staff and monitor their performance.
- Fundraising: Lead programmatic fundraising, working with NTI’s Development team. Steward existing relationships and develop new fundraising opportunities.
- External Relations: Cultivate strategic partnerships with governments, multilateral institutions, academia, and industry to advance NTI’s biosecurity agenda.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with other NTI programs to advance the NTI mission, including FutureSafe, Communications, and Government Relations.
What are the requirements for the position? Preferred candidates will have:
- 15-20 years of relevant professional, managerial and leadership experience in the Senior level experience or engagement with the U.S. government and/or international organizations is desirable.
- PhD or MD in a related discipline, or master’s degree in a related discipline and equivalent experience.
- Recognized field leader and subject matter expert in biological threat reduction, including biosecurity, global health security, and biodefense, as well as with national security policies and programs.
- Demonstrated expertise in leading programs and managing major projects, staff, and budgets. Demonstrated ability to develop, launch, and secure funding for global activities to reduce biological threats.
- Proven ability to interact effectively with senior officials from the U.S. and international public and private sectors.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills—including across cultures and among international audiences.
- Ability to travel internationally.
What would make you stand out?
- Well-versed in current trends in biosecurity/global health security, including the impact of emerging technology on safety/security, efforts to strengthen the Biological Weapons Convention, the state of pandemic preparedness, and ongoing biological events.
- Globally minded, with an understanding of US biodefence/biosecurity policy in the context of international security and experience engaging with global partners.
- Track record in raising funds or in building relationships within communities that might lead to success in these areas.
- Proven experience in high-level strategy and advocacy for change, including successful interactions with US / international policymakers (legislative & executive) and high-level stakeholders. Experience building collaborations/ coalitions working with other stakeholders.
- Evidence of ability to lead a team and/or program toward impactful outcomes in the biosecurity and global health security space.
- Exceptional written & oral communication skills, with the ability to inspire diverse stakeholders. Experience with media relations is desirable.
Hiring Pay Range: $250,000-$280,000 annual, depending on prior experience. This position is eligible for health insurance benefits, as well as other generous benefits that are part of the NTI compensation package.
