amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is seeking a Manager, Institutional Relations.
amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs. amfAR-funded research has increased our understanding of HIV and has helped lay the groundwork for major advances in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Since 1985, amfAR has raised nearly $950 million in support of its programs and has awarded more than 3,800 grants to research teams worldwide.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Manager of Institutional Relations is a key member of the Philanthropy team, overseeing amfAR’s institutional giving program. They will work with the Director of Philanthropy to strategically build and expand our current portfolio of institutional funders, which includes corporations and foundations, to sustain and increase both core and program support. They will also work closely with our Research, Public Policy, Treat Asia, Finance and Public Information departments to become familiar with amfAR’s diverse array of programs to ensure compelling, clear, high-quality proposal and report submissions.
This role requires a self-starter who is comfortable engaging staff across the organization, successfully working both independently and as a team member to create and implement fundraising strategies that reach ambitious financial goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- In collaboration with the Director of Philanthropy and Chief Development Officer, build and expand current portfolio of corporate and foundation funders by identifying, researching, and qualifying six and seven figure opportunities for funding.

- Based on established priorities, develop institutional fundraising strategies to achieve corporate and foundation fundraising goals. Serve as the primary manager for the grant submission process, tracking all outreach, and ensuring timely and accurate submission of all proposals, letters of inquiry, updates, final reports, and relevant paperwork.

- Ensure excellence in grant writing, program framing, and impact storytelling that conveys the power and importance of amfAR research and programs. Translate complex programmatic and policy content into clear, persuasive written materials.
- Maintain regular correspondence with key funding representatives to build stronger relationships, retain donors, and upgrade gift amounts.
- Ensure proper stewardship and acknowledgment of corporate and foundation donors, and work with senior staff to develop increased engagement and cultivation strategies.
- Grow into a key player in understanding the depth and breadth of the amfAR’s goals, work, and priorities, and effectively communicate the foundation’s ideas and achievements to funders and prospects. Represent amfAR in meetings with organization representatives, foundation officers, program directors and other institutional contacts, utilizing senior staff where necessary.
- Prepare planning and strategy briefings for senior staff visits with corporate and foundation prospects and donors.

- Assist the Public Information team in the development of engaging funder collateral, and work with program colleagues to ensure accurate information is provided in all funder communications. Work with the finance department to prepare budgets and other financial information for proposals, reports, and multiyear campaigns.
Support the organization’s development database in relation to institutional donors, developing strategies for its use, and collaborating with the prospect researcher to ensure regular, accurate data collection in support of meaningful, regular reporting. Maintain accurate records including contact information, activities, and opportunities.
- Provide quarterly reports on strategy, revenue and KPI updates for Institutional Relations in preparation for board presentations.
- Perform any other job-related duties, including staffing amfAR events, as assigned by Director of Philanthropy or Chief Development Officer.
Qualifications

- 5–7 years of experience in progressively responsible foundation relations, grants management, or institutional partnerships, preferably in a healthcare, medical research, or science-driven nonprofit environment.
- Strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines, competing priorities, and input from diverse stakeholders.
- Exceptional writing skills. Demonstrated track record of securing and renewing 5-7 figure grants by communicating complex and diverse programmatic issues into clear, well-organized, compelling narratives.
- Excellent relationship-builder with strong interpersonal skills and diplomatic sensibility.
- Strategic, entrepreneurial, and results-oriented, with the ability to identify and pursue high-value opportunities.
- Able to work independently, manage multiple deadlines and priorities simultaneously, and work effectively with diverse internal and external constituents.

- Highly organized, strong attention to detail, excellent judgment, and a commitment to excellence in execution. Comfort working both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Strong analytical skills for budgeting, results frameworks, and donor reporting requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office required and experience in Salesforce preferred.
- Interest in the field of HIV/AIDS preferred.
Salary Range: $85,000- $110,000
