As part of its Public Policy Practice, Altai Consulting seeks skilled candidates for a Syria project manager.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The consultant’s role will be to deliver social and economic research, monitoring and evaluation consultancy assignments for various development organizations in the Middle East, with a focus on Syria. This involves:
- Participation in the whole project cycle: timeline, establishment of research methodology, planning and conduct of field data collection, analysis and report writing
- Organization of quantitative and qualitative data collection through fieldwork interviews in various regions of Syria, and in other regional countries
- Management of teams of local consultants, interviewers and enumerators
- Analysis of the economic and social trends characterizing the current transition period in Syria
- Writing of deliverables in various formats, preparation and delivery of oral presentations of findings, formulation of recommendations to development actors in terms of project design, sectors of intervention, etc.
- Facilitation of various types of interviews: key informant interviews (with local communities, local authorities, companies, development actors, key social actors, etc.), focus group discussions, workshops
- Evaluation and third-party monitoring of development programs
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Native or fully professional level in Arabic and English.
- Master-level university education in development, economics, international relations, political sciences, or other relevant subjects.
- At least five years of experience in the field of development, including at least three in Syria, through positions for example at NGOs, UN agencies, donors or consulting positions.
- Eagerness to conduct social research in all regions of Syria, and in other regional countries
- Residing or willing to reside in Damascus and engage in work travel in the Middle East.
- Writing skills: ability to draft evaluative pieces with a good degree of autonomy.
- Oral skills: ability to deliver formal presentations and facilitate workshops with development professionals, and to adapt the tone and nature of presentations to different audiences.
FURTHER ASSETS (not mandatory)
- Work experience in Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan
- Fluency in French

- Autonomous, self-starter, proactive, at ease in a small, flexible structure.
- Positive team player, able to propose ideas, accepting constructive criticism.
- Honest, dependable.
- Eger to accept the challenges of project delivery (due to time pressure, demanding clients and interlocutors, logistics of travels, etc.)
- At ease in official settings (international conferences, formal presentations, etc.).
