We are looking for an Intern in Press Freedom Monitoring (convention d’immersion professionnelle - 6 Months)
The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) is seeking candidates for a full-time in-person internship in Brussels, which offers a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of policy areas, including media freedom and journalists’ working conditions. This Media Freedom Monitoring internship also offers the opportunity to collaborate directly with media freedom and journalists’ safety experts and senior management. The successful candidate will also be involved in the organisation of EFJ events, which can help enrich his/her professional network. He/She will join our diverse staff in Brussels for a 6-month period. The intern will integrate our team under a “convention d’immersion professionnelle”. The position will run from 4 August 2026 to 4 February 2027 - deadline for application 1 June 2026.
The EFJ is the largest journalists’ organisation in Europe representing 75 national journalists’ trade unions and professional associations in 44 countries. It is recognised by the European Union and the Council of Europe as the representative voice of journalists in Europe.
The Press Freedom Monitoring Intern will be involved in the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR). The MFRR is an EU-funded project launched in 2020 which supports journalists under threat in the EU and candidate countries. It is based on three pillars: monitoring media freedom violations, supporting journalists and media organisations and advocating for media freedom in Europe. The EFJ is part of a consortium of six European media freedom organisations.
You will be involved in the three areas of work with a strong focus on monitoring attacks on journalism under the supervision of the EFJ Media Freedom Monitoring and Communications Officer.
You will work on a diverse range of issues related to journalism and trade union movement (labour rights, media freedom, ethics, safety of journalists, SLAPPs, etc). The tasks require journalistic and writing skills, working with sources, cross-checking information and a human touch.

The intern will receive a “convention d’immersion professionnelle” with a monthly gross allowance of 1.300 euros. Public transport costs will be reimbursed on a percentage basis and prorated according to office workdays, in line with Belgian social law. Lunch vouchers of 10 euros per working day are included and can be used in grocery stores and most restaurants. Relocation expenses are not covered.
Applicants must be eligible to work in Belgium. EFJ is not able to provide visa applications and work permits. Only applicants that have the eligibility to work in Belgium will be considered for this position.
