Position description
The European Affairs Programme of the Egmont Institute is hiring a Joint Research Fellow with the European Policy Centre (EPC), with a research focus on EU Integration. The position is for an initial period of one year, renewable, starting 1 October or 1 November 2026.
The Egmont-EPC Research Fellow will be involved in the planning and execution of activities in his/her relevant policy area, both at the Egmont Institute and the EPC (research, convening conferences and seminars, and acting as liaison for joint fundraising initiatives), and will act as a link between the two think tanks.
This is a hybrid role based in Brussels. Candidates are expected to be based in and regularly present in Brussels; Egmont does not provide visa sponsorship or assistance for this position.
Main responsibilities
Research
- Produce policy briefs, research articles, and commentaries.
- Monitor policy developments on EU integration at the EU and member state level.
- Participate in and actively seek external representation opportunities, such as presenting papers at academic conferences or speaking at policy events.
- Seek opportunities for external publications.
Collaboration with external researchers
- Reach out to potential external contributors, new or associate fellows, for (co)authorship and edit their submissions.
- Outline a yearly programme of conferences and seminars and contact relevant speakers.
Collaboration with external organisations
- Act as a liaison between the EPC and Egmont and support their cooperation.
- Build partnerships with other think tanks, universities, research institutions, and experts.
- Engage directly and consult with policymakers in Belgian and European institutions.
European Affairs Programme
- Identify opportunities and apply for research fundraising, for the European Affairs programme and for joint Egmont-EPC initiatives.
- Outline the research agenda of the European Affairs programme in coordination with the programme director.
- While no direct HR supervision, work with, and when needed, guide European Affairs Programme interns.
Qualifications
- A PhD in political science, economics, international relations, law, or social sciences.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in research, preferably in think tanks or other policy research organisations.
- Strong knowledge of EU integration and European affairs.
- Excellent research and analytical skills, demonstrated through an established track record of publications.
- Strong organisational and planning skills; project management experience is an asset.
- IT proficiency (Microsoft Office, Webex).
- Excellent written and spoken English, with a good command of French and Dutch.
What we offer
- Full-time, renewable contract for a period of 1 year.
Salary in the range of approximately €4,120 to €4,4365 gross/month.
- 13th month (year-end bonus) and double holiday pay (double pécule).
