Position description

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) seeks a Senior Communications Manager to expand external outreach to increase support for NDI’s mission by developing communication strategies with a heavy focus on online and social media, in addition to traditional press. The role involves writing, storytelling and the use of creative and design elements such as graphic design and videography. Ths will also include outreach to the U.S. Congress. The position reports to the Director, Government Relations and Communications, and does not have direct reports.


  • Develop and implement social media, press and external communications strategies to increase support for international democracy assistance;
  • Develop social media campaigns that reach large numbers of new international and domestic audiences in order to increase online engagement and fundraising;
  • Manage press outreach to promote NDI staff experts and public events in the media, including drafting press releases, statements, advisories and opinion-related pieces;
  • Expand congressional outreach with Members of Congress and staff to highlight NDI’s role in promoting international democracy, credible and fair elections, and open and transparent governance;
  • Contribute to the writing and design of e-newsletters and other email communications with a goal of substantially increasing subscriptions;
  • Develop video concepts in conjunction with other team members to share NDI success stories that highlight our work with democracy partners around the world;
  • Create and edit content for the NDI website, blog and social media accounts, in conjunction with other team staff members;
  • Monitor congressional hearings and markups and assist in drafting congressional testimony for NDI experts;
  • Assist with congressional events to demonstrate NDI impact;
  • Assist in the design of brochures, infographics, annual reports, event invitations and other online and printed materials;
  • Monitor information sources, including think tanks, traditional media, blogs and social media networks, for opportunities to highlight NDI’s work;
  • Oversee special projects, including videos, workshops for NDI staff and press contact databases.


  • Bachelor’s degree required; Journalism, communications, digital media, graphic design, or related courses preferred;
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience in the field of communications and government relations, including developing communications, branding, marketing and public relations strategies;
  • Experience includes at least three (3) years of experience and proven track record in rapidly expanding online presence and outreach through social media, email marketing, online advertising and fundraising;
  • Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills required;
  • Creative talent, visual storytelling, and professional publishing skills required;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively necessary;
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, use independent judgment and follow-through with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work under pressure and deadlines;
  • Congressional experience or prior engagement with the U.S. Congress preferred;
  • Graphic design, photography and some videography skills desirable;
  • International relations and development experience, including knowledge of NDI’s democracy work a plus;
  • Knowledge with Adobe Creative Suite, FinalCut Pro, CiviCRM and Drupal preferred;
  • Knowledge with web design, HTML and CSS desirable.
