Position description

The British Bilateral Embassy in Belgium is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a full time Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Attaché.

We are looking for a professional and motivated individual to join our busy Political, Economic and Public Diplomacy Team.

This is a challenging, varied and fast-moving job which requires a significant degree of independent working, contact-making and flexibility. As a key member of the Embassy team working on bilateral issues and the UK’s exit from the EU and on UK-Belgian relations, the job-holder will need to deal confidently and fluently with a variety of Justice and Home Affairs issues including illegal immigration, serious organised crime and modern slavery.  An understanding of the relationship between Belgium’s operational and political objectives will be important. The job-holder will be expected to accompany the Ambassador to meetings with Belgian senior officials and Ministers, and to network confidently on his or her own.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and use network and experience to help the Embassy reach out to a range of stakeholders across the Belgian system, in order to deliver UK bilateral and Brexit objectives. Lobby regularly on key JHA issues and report back as required;
  • Provide high quality analysis, influencing and reporting on Justice and Home Affairs, in the context of the relationship between Belgium and the United Kingdom. As a neighbouring country to the UK, there are certain areas where Belgian assistance and cooperation is vital.  One of those areas is migration where the job holder, working with operational colleagues and UK policy makers, will lead the Embassy’s political work aimed at improving bilateral coordination and cooperation. This would include strategic communications campaigns and a focus on the whole of route approach to combating Organised Immigration Crime. The Channel Tunnel rail link and juxtaposed immigration controls in Brussels are an unusual feature of the JHA relationship, another example of how the jobholder’s work will directly touch on important UK interests. The job holder will use their own analysis and influence to develop a programme of activity with the overall aim of reducing the risks to UK security.
  • Respond to fast moving priorities and ensure that the Ambassador, Embassy and London stakeholders are updated. Generate and deliver ideas for outreach and events to further UK and Belgian bilateral relations.

  • Previous experience of JHA and/or EU public policy;
