Position description

Vox Media employees thrive on innovation and change while ambitiously seeking to master their subject areas, hone their craft, and improve their communities. We help smart, talented, creative professionals make a meaningful impact in media, technology and the world around them. The Vox Media house of networks includes industry-leading media forces like SB Nation, Eater, The Verge, Vox, Curbed, Recode, Racked and Polygon, and reaches an audience of hundreds of millions, generating over a billion content views each month.                                                                        is a user’s guide to the news, produced by the beat writers and subject-issue experts who know it best. We’re looking for a senior reporter for our foreign and national security section, who can help expand our coverage of international stories and the big ideas and global trends driving them.

What you'll do:

This is a high-level writing job in the newsroom. The position will involve a wide variety of short posts and long articles on a range of topics, but it doesn’t hurt to have a particular specialty or considerable experience in a certain subject matter or region of the world.

We’re looking for someone who brings a reporter’s innate sense of a scoop to the beat, a deep understanding of Vox’s explanatory mission, and a passion for international news coverage. Your reporting and analysis will have a huge opportunity to reach massive audiences across platforms, social networks, and via search engines: so the ideal candidate will also have an idea of how to package stories and ideas for a wide variety of potentially interested audiences.

  • A strong desire to report on and write about foreign affairs and national security
  • An analytical approach to major stories and a passion for digging into everything from fine-grain policy issues to big-picture international relations theory
  • At least five to seven years of foreign affairs and/or national security writing experience
  • The ability to explain complex ideas and intricate political dynamics in clear, straightforward language
  • Ideas for new and creative new story formats
  • Strong reporting skills, including knowledge of which sources to turn to when working on a story

The ideal candidate is someone with interest and expertise in covering foreign policies, not just foreign policy. We want to cover the big issues, like the special counsel’s Russia investigation, North Korea’s nuclear program, and conflicts in the Middle East. But we also want to cover the plight of the Rohingya in Myanmar, the political crisis in Venezuela, and the implications of China’s rising economy. We think foreign affairs are important and interesting even when they don’t directly affect Americans, and we want to reflect that.
