Position description

Eisenhower Fellowships (EF) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan leadership development organization based in Philadelphia, PA. Through its international and USA programs, EF identifies, empowers and connects innovative leaders through a transformative fellowship experience and lifelong engagement in a global network of over 2,000 dynamic change agents, committed to creating a world that is peaceful, prosperous and just. Each year, approximately 70 U.S. and international citizens from EF’s network of 55 countries travel on fellowships that range in length from four to six weeks. Fellowships are individually tailored to reflect each Fellow’s professional interests and projects designed to have real-world, positive societal impact.

EF is seeking a Program Officer (PO) to work with its international fellowships team. This is a full-time, contract-based position for six months, from mid-January to mid-June 2019. The PO will work with our international Fellows to design and implement customized fellowship programs of six weeks in length. The work requires close coordination with the Fellows and the Global Programs team. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. The PO will report to the Director of Programs and Communications.

  • Establish a productive and positive working relationship with each Fellow
    • Work with Fellows as a peer coach to define clear and realistic fellowship goals and a fellowship project that will ultimately result in real-world, positive impact
    • Communicate with Fellows on a regular basis via email and Skype/phone both before and during their fellowship
    • Ensure that Fellows understand and comply with EF policies and procedures
  • Conduct in-depth research in a wide range of professional fields to identify potential interlocutors and organizations for Fellows to meet on fellowship
    • Offer Fellows a range of fellowship appointments and experiences that are sufficiently diverse to enable personal and professional growth and provide a representative range of perspectives
    • Ensure that each fellowship includes an appropriate balance of professional appointments with downtime for reflection and room for spontaneity, as well as opportunities to network with USA Fellows, EF Trustees and sponsors
  • Implement a fellowship itinerary, based on a research proposal agreed upon with each Fellow, of around 8-10 cities and 45-60 appointments
  • In partnership with a program assistant, enter appointment information into a database used by Fellows to manage their daily schedule and oversee arrangements for international and domestic travel and hotel bookings
  • Calculate Fellows’ per diem allowance based on their travel itinerary

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as attention to detail and deadlines
  • Experience networking and establishing productive professional relationships with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Resourcefulness, flexibility, and proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously as well as to organize and analyze a high volume of information in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent, in-depth and high-quality research in diverse fields and sectors, based on predefined goals and expected outcomes
  • Commitment to working collaboratively on a team and maintaining open and positive lines of communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, and familiarity with Salesforce is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience; international affairs experience strongly preferred
