UCSB's Global Studies Department is widely recognized as one of the nation's first interdisciplinary undergraduate majors in international studies to focus on globalization. Today, the Department of Global Studies has a thriving undergraduate major, a highly successful interdisciplinary Masters Program, PhD Emphasis, and a growing PhD program. The Global Studies major provides a well-rounded liberal arts degree that will help prepare students for a variety of careers in the international arena. It will also help prepare students for further graduate study in international affairs, international business, peace and world order studies, area studies, and the emergent global civil society. Global Studies majors are encouraged to become global thinkers--they learn how to relate their knowledge of a particular part of the world to the larger trends and issues that affect the whole globe.
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to work in fast-paced environment with excellent verbal, written and organizational skills. Must be able to work with students and advise them on academic and personal issues and provide information, resources and relevant policies to answer questions and solve issues. Must be able to follow established guidelines and policies regarding academic advising criteria and meet constant multiple deadlines. Must be accurate, thorough and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to organize, prioritize and complete work with frequent interruptions. Must have good computer skills and the ability to learn new programs. Must be able to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff and other campus offices on a variety of advising issues and provide information and guidance regarding departmental and UC policies and procedures for advising undergraduate majors.
