Position description

The focus of this assignment will be on gender-based violence, specifically female genital mutilation as a harmful practice, where UNFPA jointly with UNICEF leads the largest Global Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation: Accelerating Change. It focuses on accelerating the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in one generation. The Joint Programme supports a holistic, integrated and multisectoral approach that supports community level social norms change; access to education, health care, welfare and legal services for girls and women at risk or affected by FGM; and the development and implementation of laws criminalizing FGM.

Under the third phase of the programme a fourth outcome on countries have better capacity to generate and use evidence and data for policy making and improving programming was identified. The major activity will be to manage knowledge and exchange of good practices.

The Position:

The Knowledge Management, Advocacy and Communications Specialist, will mainly support the portfolio of the female genital mutilation elimination (FGM) joint programme, in addition to providing support to the communication needs of the Gender and Human Rights Branch (GHRB).

S/he will lead the knowledge management and communication in wide range of areas related to FGM and Social Norms on a global, regional and country levels. S/he will work in close collaboration with the FGM coordination team of UNFPA and UNICEF in the headquarters office, UNFPA’s Media and Communication Branch (MCB), Regional Offices (ROs), Liaison Offices (LOs), and Country Offices (Cos) to successfully achieve communication/advocacy/knowledge management results.

On the knowledge management component, the specilalist will support UNFPA and UNICEF ROs, LOs and COs develop a well-maintained knowledge management system that gathers, extracts, packages, maintains, distributes and continually updates evidence, data and knowledge on FGM for internal and external audiences.

On the communication and advocacy component, the analysist will be responsible for the planning and implementation of the Joint Programme’s communications, innovation and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of programme with stakeholders, including donors, partners, the media and the public. Additionally, s/he will be responsible for drafting and editing communication materials and supporting communication initiatives with MCB, at regional and country levels.

S/he will report directly to the Senior Advisor, Coordinator UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of FGM.

Education and certification:

  • Master’s Degree in Communication, Media, Public Relations, International Development or any relevant field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the areas of communication, international development, gender, media, advocacy and partnerships.
  • Experience working in humanitarian work is an advantage.
  • Experience within the United Nations System is highly desirable.
  • Experience using technology as a medium for knowledge sharing and capacity building; iDocs, InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Priemiere, Photoshop, and other online based tools like: Canva, Infographic, etc.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Working knowledge of other UN official languages is considered an asset; especially Arabic and French.
