Position description

A visionary and dynamic leader with demonstrably good managerial judgment and professional integrity is needed for the role of Korean Service Director in Radio Free Asia’s Washington, DC, offices.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include web, video, mobile and e-books. RFA is currently seeking as its Korean Service Director an individual who will lead by example and motivate, inspire and nurture mission-driven journalists to give the best they can, at all times, to RFA’s audiences in North Korea. This person should bring his/her own gravitas and credibility to the service. The Service Director needs to be a visionary and a dynamic leader who has a deep commitment to unbiased, high-quality journalism and thorough knowledge of North and South Korea.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrably good managerial judgment and professional integrity to work in a challenging yet dynamic media environment. He/she must be able to ensure the quality of journalism required at RFA. He/she must be able to put the needs of the audience above all other considerations. He/she must have ties on the Korean Peninsula in order to have real-time knowledge and maintain a keen awareness of the political, economic, sociological and environmental situations in the region.

Responsibilities Include

  • Planning, directing, and supervising the development of Korean broadcast and multimedia programs and daily operations of the Service.
  • Providing strong editorial leadership and managerial guidance to the staff in both Washington and Seoul.
  • Monitoring and maintaining quality control of broadcasts and new media offerings made by the staff and contributors.
  • Directing the preparation of original scripts on news, current events, features, and other topics of particular interest to the target audience.
  • Leading the Korean Service’s social media efforts to better engage with audiences.
  • Establishing and maintaining contact with Korean specialists and sources to enhance program content and stay abreast of political, cultural, and economic developments.
  • Handling Korean Service administrative, personnel, and staffing matters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (degree in journalism or related field preferred).
  • Minimum ten years' working experience in journalism or related field (or equivalent combination of experience and graduate studies in journalism or related field, with four or more years' experience in a supervisory capacity preferred.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Korean, and professional level of English proficiency.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current political, economic, and social conditions in North and South Korea, and greater familiarity with US policy toward North Korea.
  • Strong editing skills and demonstrated ability to exercise unbiased, timely, and principled news analysis and judgment.
  • Demonstrated managerial and problem-solving skills.
