Position description

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Research Assistant to work on the Asia team in the National Security and International Policy department. This person will work on a wide range of Asia policy issues with a special focus on India, Japan, and Southeast Asia. As a member of the Asia team, the Research Assistant will contribute to regionwide policy analysis and formulation. And as a member of the National Security and International Policy team, the Research Assistant will also conduct research and related tasks for the broader team. The Research Assistant will also carry out administrative tasks and other duties as directed. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Analyze policy trends in Asia and outline potential ramifications for the United States and for U.S. foreign policy.
  • Provide research and administrative support to the U.S.-India task force project.
  • Provide research and administrative support for various Japan-related projects.
  • Help develop written products across an array of formats, including talking points, charts, issue briefs, reports, op-eds, columns, and blog posts.
  • Support meeting logistics and administrative tasks as required, including meetings and events in international locations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • One to three years experience.
  • General knowledge of Asian political, security, and economic issues with a demonstrated interest in U.S. foreign policy toward Asia.
  • Comfortable traveling internationally and supporting international delegations and senior leadership from American Progress and partner organizations.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
  • Critical thinking and writing skills; ability to rapidly and thoroughly compile notes and provide initial analysis to Director and Senior Fellow.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70.
